I got a pair of brand new atomic thugs last year, never mounted. they are 181's. i didnt mount them last year because i didnt have to money to buy bindings. at the time i was thinking to get marker schizos so i could have them centered if i want to do anything bc. but then i could have them pushed back for leisurely deeper rides. But now i am facing the issue on whether or not i should do that. i have a pair of liberty helix's mounted 2 back. but i would rather have those be used for bc then the thugs cause they are lighter. I want to have at least one of the pairs to have touring bindings on them. so i was thinking for the thugs put some marker dukes on there. but then it goes back to my idea before for using them for freestyle in the bc. would you guys recommend using the thugs as a actual bc and touring ski? it is so wide and i dont know what i really should do! can i have some help on what i should do? i want to try and make the least amount of changes possible, and save the most money. thanks and +k for bumps and help.
center is great if you want to a fun jib pow ski for jumping and riding switch. if you want the thugs to actually ski regular and rip deep snow go 2.5-3cm back and they will perform better... atleast my experience, hope that helps
I skied 192 Thugs last year and went against several opinions who told me to mount -5 to -6 (the "Classic" line is -6 and for what it's worth Durtschi told me -5 himself for performance and Benchetler said -3 to -4 for all round with some jibbing). I went -3.5 and they were fun but they seriously suffered in deeper stuff. I'm throwing Dukes on them for this winter at -5.5 which is my only choice to dodge the old holes but that should work fine.
If you're always jibbing, seriously doing lots of switch pow and don't mind sacrificing some performance then go -2.5 to -3.5 (don't kid yourself how much switch you'll actually be doing, I made that mistake). If you want to change things up then Schizos would be a good call, their problems have now been worked out, I'm putting those on some Fujas this year myself. If you're just skiing them with not much switch then go -5 to -6.
i am leaning towards the dukes as of now.. but will they actually serve a helpful purpose? my only concern is that they are so fat im not sure what skins to get etc.. but i feel that i might do some jibbing (but probbly just landing switch not actually skiing). so if i were to mount some dukes, then do u think -6 or what?
Yeah go -5 then. Dukes are pretty light for such a wide ski, just get 120mm skins or 130 if you can find them cheap.
I'm not sure what the verdict is on switch landings on Dukes, I'm really not planning on it much (if ever) on mine. If you want to be more solid and don't mind spending a little then Schizos + Trekkers would cover everything, or set up some inserts for alpine bindings at -3-4cm and Dukes at -6cm if you've got money to burn.
i just measured my center and the lines were 3 mm off.. I think im really leaning towards the dukes now. mounting at 5-6 back. but im also still skeptical because i hear good and bad things about the thugs. If i mount them at -6 will they still ski as well as a ski with rocker? such as the bentchetler?
