Whats more extreme Skiing or Snowboarding !!! Please Help !!!

Hello people

I am a 3rd year student from the university of Portsmouth and i am doing my dissertation project on the sensation seeking differences between skiing and snowboarding and whether these differences then lead to having more likelihood of experiencing conflict on the slopes. if you could please fill in the questionnaire by following the link below i would be very grateful.

Please answer the questions truthfully and thankyou very much, i will post my results from the study on here after i have analysed and reported them.

Plus just to make this clear as some people seem to been having a few issues. The questionnaire was not designed by me it is the work of a Dr Marvin Zuckerman and measures the psychological trait of sensation seeking. The questionnaire is for both skiers and snowboarders and the results have not been manipulated in any way.

I know some of the questions may be hard to answer with only having two fixed answers, but the questions needed to be like that as each answer has a value towards your final sensation seeking score.

As much as you are an academic marvel FRODO, i think im going to go with my respected lecturers on this one and I think I will stick with Dr Marvin Zuckerman the credited Psychologist that doesn’t think this is stupid.

But this isn't a new survey it has been credited by many different scientists and used in many studies into sensation seeking. It has been credited to be reliable and give valid results so as much as i appreciate the feedback from FRODO I’m going to choose not to follow it as i think they are not the most reliable source.

Your professor may be a very good researcher, but many professors are not. Often professors are required to do research by the university. At my school I've noticed that many projects are done without much thought, just so the professor can keep their job. I think that may be why this project is being criticized so much. And because the questions have a much different dialect than many of us are used to.

If the questions scared you im guessing your score would be low. I know some of the questions are a little strange but Dr Marvin Zuckerman knows what he is talking about when it comes to sensation seeking and this is his most reliable way of measuring the trait.

I don’t even know Dr Marvin Zuckerman he is just a professor that wrote the survey that has been tried and tested many times which is why I chose to use it as it has been proven to be reliable and valid.

A few of the questions seemed awkward - maybe define a few of the words in there for people.

Thanks mate but as I have said before as much as i respect your feedback I’m going to go with the many scientists that don’t think this is stupid as they are respected throughout the field of sensation seeking and your not.

I was disappointed to not see some scale of results immediately, but no matter. Even with 45 alignment questions with only two options it's going to be a lot of work putting the results together. Good luck and post results here when you're done.

i thought that was a pretty lame survey, but did it anyway. sure its a sensation seeking survey and it only asked extremes. i think a better survey would be to scale opinions. i dont go out of my way to make friends with gay ppl, nor do i avoid them. i treat them like anyone else. forcin me to pick one of those is forcing me to lie and thats what the result of the survey will be. 

whoever made it is just looking for some sensational result to be able to say skiers are more extreme in their lifestyle than snowboarders or vice versa when the reailty is much different. thats not genuine research and is pretty retarded if u ask me

The gay question was just a derivative of any other extreme, I just thought a quantitative survey with more than two or three options (good-neutral-bad) and with text-based answers... Too much work for both the interviewee and analyzer of the results if what they are looking for is not a simple this or that, but a select combination of stereotypical traits found, in this case, thrill-seekers.

The questionnaire was not just designed for skiers and snowboarders it was designed for the whole population. so the questions don’t relate to skiing or snowboarding at all but relate to the sensation seeking personality trait.

The questionnaire can be split up into 4 subscales experience seeking, disinhibition, thrill and adventure seeking and boredom susceptibility. So as some of the questions may not seem relevant they all add up to your sensation seeking score. There are other ways to measure sensation seeking but it has been proven that this method is just as reliable and gives just as valid results. So for the purpose of analysing this is still going to take me ages but is a much more simple way to any scaled questions. So with results just as reliable this was the best way to measure the psychological trait.

Done, some interesting ones on there...

Just in case you are including the entire survey when you submit your project, there are a few spelling errors in there you might want to fix:

#5- "brief" description, not "breif"
#33 - dive "off", not "of"
#28 - jumping out of a "plane", not a "plan"

Anyone that thinks this is cool and saying "don't listen to them it's a good survey" well fuck that! like a million people said, it has no relevance. Have you smoked marijuana and do you wanna try the new hallucinogens have nothing to do with anything. Like how say a skier says no and a snowboarder says yes does that mean a snowboarder is more hardcore? like wtf how does this find out that one sport is more extreme than another??

Did your professor approve your questions?

A lot of them have huge biases and only provide for extremes and dont given an option to opt out.

I dont like boisterous or boring people. You can be extremely interesting and come off modest. I hope that is how a majority of people are.


Also, the Swingers question. Really? Do you think the majority of people announce their status to people? Do you like to hang around swingers is irrelevant. I'm sure I know at least 1 or 2 and I'm probably friends with them, but whatever, that is their business.

Maybe if you had said, would you consider swinging, yes or no... that would be more valid.

Also, the drugs thing. I have no desire to do that stuff for myself cause it interferes with the massively physically demanding activities that I do, and have a pretty negative family history of that stuff....

Personally I believe that your questioner would have done better with a 5 point scale. Or simple yes/nos

I get where you are coming from and the study could be interesting, but I'm not a fan of your methods. Did you not take a statistics class as part of your degree program?

As I have tried to explain numerous times the survey obviously doesn’t determine that one sport is more extreme than the other as such. But will determine if there is a difference in the sensation seeking scores between the two participants. Also as i have said before you may feel that some questions have no relevance but the survey is not designed just for extreme sports participants it’s designed for the whole public. If there is a difference in the sensation seeking scores it still does not mean that one sport is more extreme that the other but may just mean the perception of that sport is more extreme or it’s perceived to have higher risk thus attracting the participants with a higher sensation seeking score. There may be no differences between the two sports I don’t know until I have the results.
