However, I do have some common sense. If you think you need "talking out" of it, understand that even though it may be a pretty sweet deal, your money will be MUCH better spent elsewhere. Things more suited to your needs and wants will come around and 550 is a solid chunk into any purchase.
Save your money for something better, man. I work in a ski shop surrounded by nice gear I could get for cheap but every time I'm tempted to look up the price on a cool hoodie or jacket or ski I have to stop myself and look at the bigger picture. That money will feel SO much better going toward something you NEED.
a zoom lens is one of the most necessary lenses. ever. no matter what you shoot.
To OP, the old photog me would hop on the deal but i have to agree with the other advice in this thread. Save up and buy something you'll really need in the long run. Of course if you decide that you want f4 in the long run (i've made this choice for a wide angle) then i'd go for it.
Not gonna lie jason for Mark I 70-200's from sharpest to least sharp goes like this(I believe):
1. 70-200f/4 IS
2.70-200f/2.8 IS
3.70-200 f 2.8
4.70-200 f4
Here's my talking you out of it: You don't think you need IS but TRUST me if you're going to get a telephoto you want to shell out the extra cash for IS because carrying a tripod around 24/7 is a bitch and it cuts keeper to non keeper ratio in half I would say in lower light handheld
