Off season fitness?

So I just got one of these stepping machines for free, is it right for keeping my legs fit over the summer/pre-season workouts?

I know nothing about excercising/fitness btw...

just go for a run and do a lot of stretching for flexibility.

haha there have been tons of threads about off season training for skiing. But good luck sorting through all the different advice. Of course that will help but there are lots of things you could do that would help more.

orr if you ever thought about getting into rowing. its the best thing for you. only goes for the summer if you just do recreational.

meh. i would say depending on how ur knees are either run a shit load or get on the bike.

personally i work out 5 days a week but thats for an overal fitness level i hope to attain not just for skiing.

i can tell you what i do: mtb, running, gymnastics. def. not going on one of these machines. i'll save that up for when i'm 50 or 60. :D

No, a race in England, it's the only time I row in the year though, so not a huge help for my fitness.

I got the exercise machine from a friend for free so I figured it couldn't do any harm to have some blasts on it so I suffer less for the first few weeks when winter hits.

get a job (unless you already have one), get a gym membership, learn to workout on your own

and not only be jacked for skiing but be jacked in general.  (y)

Those machines are good to use if you have really shit knees (like me) and shouldn't really run. Sure, it's a little gay but no gayer than working out in a room with a bunch of men pumped on roids.

YMMV, but I've been doing yoga everyday for the last 3+ months. My legs are now in MUCH better shape and condition than any strength training or running I've done in the past. And this is coming from someone that used to run 15+ miles a week and able to free squat 315 for 3 sets of 10-12.

In England, the amount of testosterone pumped men trying to out do the guy next to them is horrible, it's like one big, semi-cald, gay, game of one-upmanship. Based on that I will not join a gym even if it was free.

To make using the cross trainer slightly less gay I wear my gangster clothes and watch ski films while doing it, it's a start....

I blew my left knee 08/09 so I suppose this is good for it?

I suppose I'll start running then.

D1 track workouts FTW.

Run to get the cardio, do plyos they make you more explosive and condition your tendons and muscles to accept impacts and to transfer energy. Squats, low weight and high reps will make you strong without potentially hurting yourself and stretch alot. Flexibility is everything.

I try to go the gym 4-5 times a week and i do a total body workout, i have been focusing on my legs a lot since i tore my acl last ski season. Biking, lifting, and doing plyos.

The gyms in Surrey I've been to it very much is!

As a driver I resent cyclists they get in the way all the time, so I don't want to cycle and cause car drivers the misery I suffer. I found a exercise bike for super cheap though, I'm probably going to buy that.

most of the time is because the driver is just plain scared to make the pass and jams up traffic.....and the cyclist is going "you got the room..quite being a girl"...just sayyiiingg

The best and simple thing you can get is a half-balance inflated ball and a medicine ball- train you dynamic core balance. It will keep you busy for hours and challenge you as well.

Core matters the most.

Track workouts are your best bet.  Plyometric workouts will make you super explosive and flexibility is key.  I started stretching this winter in december and it saved my season.  I had what would have a been and ACL tearing fall in january and if I hadn't been stretching everyday i would have been doing PT right now.

It's nothing to do with driving ability, I pretty much guarantee I can drive "better" than you. Cyclists are annoying for drivers, full stop.

seriously, get on a bike and ride on the road..never thought i would meet a kid who would rather get an exercise bike..because they are scared they are going to annoy cars while riding...or thats just a good excuse because they are plain scared of riding in traffic...

Riding in traffic isn't bad. I go to school in NYC and ride to class nearly every day. Just be aware of the drivers on the road and ride like they can't see you. That way you'll be ready  for any mistake that a driver will make.

its good for general fitness. Plyos are key, but if you're serious bout skiing you want to avoid running. Skiing is already hard on the body. Biking is better, low impact and works the hamstrings, which is good cause skiers tend to over develop their quads.
