Where were you on 9/11/01?

i don't want any conspiracy bullshit or anything like that, this is neither the time nor place to discuss it.

9/11 effected the people more than anything, and being that we, ns'ers, are people...i think it's more interesting to see where we were, how old we were, what we were doing etc etc. NS is in general a younger crowd, and i think the younger generation is left out when discussing 9/11. All i read about is how everyone was at work and so on...

So NS, where were you on 9/11/01?

I'll start. I was in 6th grade, and it was a beautiful day out. From my bus stop that morning, i could see planes leaving Boston, and i watched them gracefully flying off into the distance, completely unaware. The school day was completely normal, except for the fact that there were more police around, and we weren't allowed outside for recess. They didn't tell us anything, which in retrospect, i can somewhat understand.

When i got home, i ran off the bus, and my mother met me outside and asked if i knew what had happened. I then watched cnn replay the events of the day for hours. And that night i remember watching George bush address the nation, and specifically my father stated that "you'll remember this forever. This is going to be your pearl harbor."

and he was right.

vibes to all the NS members that were close-by that day, I couldn't imagine what that must have felt like. Being in Wisconsin was emotional enough.

I was in 8th grade when it happened. In 1st hour math. Just when the bell rang my math teacher told me a plane hit the world trade center. I thought, "probably just an accident from a smaller personal plane". When I got to my second hour science class, my teacher already had CNN on. Not a single word regarding anything scientific was said once. My class and I watched the second plane hit the second tower live. As we watched both buildings now smoking from two large passenger planes, i have a vivid memory of my teacher saying "there's NO WAY you can prove this is a terrorist attack" I, along with at least ten other kids walked out of the class right there and watched CNN for the rest of the day in the Library. I ended up leaving school early, not even saying anything. Just left. I then watched CNN at home for a really decent amount of time. I remember being in disbelief for the longest time that day, just shocked that this was affecting so many people, even me. A 14 year old who hadn't yet been to NYC with no family-ties or even friends in the area.

One of the most eerie feelings about the whole thing... Ever since I was a child, I would see the World Trade Center in movies, magazines, photographs... It was an icon, obviously. But it was such a strange feeling when I first got to NYC. Even three years after the events of 9/11. It was crazy NOT seeing the towers after all those years of anticipation

3rd grade during recess, they evacuated the school and when i was getting off the bus saw fighter jets going overhead. two of my neighbors dies. RIP

i know. i'm confused as to how anyone remembers anything from 5th grade and earlier. but i guess because it was a big moment in time... i guess i was in grade 9?

pretty much the same only i was in 4th grade. And my uncle is a firefighter in the bronx and had to go. Thankfully he was alright.

Not really confusing, it was one of the biggest events in history that our generation was alive for and it's pretty easy for people to remember 5th grade.

1st or 2nd grade, i remember my mom picking me up from school and telling me about it, at the time i really had no comprehension of how horrible this was, i remember watching the news when i got home and my mom crying.

I actually remember getting on the bus that day and within the hour my mother pickign me up from class. I noticed there were no planes in the sky, i believe my mother mentioned something about planes so i was looking for them. I didn't have a full concept of what was goin on.

While watching the news I saw the second plane in the distance and thought to myself what if..within 8 seconds it did. I walked outside down the street and watched the smoke/second tower fall.

I live right outside the city and from several spots you can see a perfect skyline of the city.

1st grade, remember driving home in the car with my parents. They said that it was a very bad day, and I asked why, and they told me. I was pretty sad, but that's all I remember from that day, was that car ride home.

I was in grade 2. I heard about it as soon as I got off the bus at the end of my street at the end of the school day, I just couldn't get my mind around why someone would do that.

3rd grade, my mom came to get me early at like 11:30 from work... (she works downtown Cincinnati so i could imagine the traffic trying to get out of there) .. she comes to get me, i have no idea whats going on... i then proceed to watch news with her.

I was in 6th grade during 4th period study hall i remember two teachers were talking quietly in the hall and then one said, "well this is going to be there history" and he turned on the tv the rest of the day we watched cnn in every class.

my question is, what were all of your schools doing letting 1st and 3rd graders watch this?

i was in 6th grade, we saw the second plan hit in home room.

i also live close to ohare airport, so theres basically planes flying overhead 24/7, and i remember surreal silence for like 48 hours afterward.

My 2nd grade class. Everything in the school was chaos. Teachers running down the halls crying. I was sitting on the desks watching it live with my teacher and students, telling them how it was probably the Cubans because I had learned about the Cuban missile crisis a few days earlier. Now I'm thinking constantly about 9/11 and Pearl Harbor the movie is playing in the background. I'm trying to fight tears from all the shittyness in the air right now.

yea i'm especially wondering what teacher would ever have the kids drawing what they saw...

might have been a simple distraction, or they wanted the younger kids to remember it. If i was in 1st or 2nd grade i probably wouldn't really remember what happened, but i'd remember drawing it.

it was extremely strange that following week though. I live under the path to/from logan in boston, and most transatlantic flights leaving the US fly over my area, so the absence was prominent. It was so weird looking up and not seeing any contrails or hearing planes.

Junior year of college drinking beer before my 10am biology lab that had us dissecting frogs. Amazing thing was that the teacher didn't cancel class even though almost every one of us was from NJ or NY. Kinda felt like the people in Delaware (at least at the university) didn't give a shit.

i was in pre-k, and all i remember is i was in school and the announcements came on and our principal said that a plane had just struck the world trade centers. i had no idea what those even were at the time.

I was in 1st grade. No one said anything about it in my school but my mom came and got me at lunch. My dad was in atlanta at the time and ended up having to drive back to massachusetts in a rented car.

Was in 3rd grade. Mom came to take me out of school saying something was wrong. Thought my cat died. Later found out my dad was supposed to be at a building across the street from them but his meeting got cancelled.

I was 10 in 5th grade, that's not that young. Not hard to remember back. I remember being in kindergarden. I remember breaking my collar bone before I was 2 years old, but like you said, that was a big moment so that's why I remember that one. But I remember going to preschool and alot of other stuff from when I was in that age range.

my friend dad is a morningman at a local radio, and this precise date i went with him to see how it works in radio station ( for a school project). We were supposed to leave at noon, but turns out he had to continue his show for 10 hours, while i was waiting outside.

damn, this thread makes me feel old. i was a sophomore in college. i crashed out at my parents house because i had been partying on that side of town the night before. my mom woke me up on their couch at about 8:30ish and told me a plane had crashed in to one of the wtc towers. she had cnn on the tv. i remember being like, "wow, that's crazy.", but obviously didn't understand the severity of the situation at that time.

i was sitting outside on the front steps of the house smoking a cigarette and then she came out and said another plane just hit the other tower. At that point I realized this shit is no accident.

Planes continued to fall from the sky. I went to my couple of classes, but all we did was stare blindly at tv's the entire time. Crazy shit. RIP to those lost.

I remember it pretty vividly. I was in second grade and my teacher got the news and started crying. All of us were doing our morning worksheets and wondering why she was crying. She told us that planes had crashed into the twin towers and drew a diagram of it. I think she was in shock. We didn't have any more work the rest of the day but most kids stayed in school. I think some of the kids were happy just to have no work, but I remember being pretty scared. My parents wouldn't really tell me any more of what happened when I got home, and I didn't really realize the magnitude of it until many years later.

Woke up to it... My brother lived in New York at the time so naturally my entire family was very worried for his sake... fortunately he was on the other side of town at the time.. I had gone to my 4th grade classes where the teachers were not allowed to show us the broadcasts on TV because the school wished for our parents to talk to us about it.

3rd grade using the restroom i come back and the tvs were on and the teachers were crying and i look up and theres a big fly on a building and at the time i had no clue what was going on and i remember my mom trying to tell me everything that was going on and what might happen now

I was in 1st grade and i remember the principal came into our class to tell the teacher about what happened. I just remember some parents were scared cause we live in a suburb of Chicago and everyone thought they were going to do the same thing to the Sears tower. I also remember being mad that every time i changed the channel i saw the same video being played over and over. It was depressing
