U.S. Discovers Nearly $1 Trillion in Afghan Mineral Deposits

The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in
untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any
previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter
the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself,
according to senior American government officials.

The previously unknown deposits -- including huge veins of
iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals
like lithium -- are so big and include so many minerals that
are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could
eventually be transformed into one of the most important
mining centers in the world, the United States officials
believe.

Just got this in my NY times email alerts. Thought it was pretty interesting.

way to use google for some shit everyone already knows about. If you didn't learn that afghanistan includes a part of the himilayas then you did not pay attention is school. I swear every world geography courses from elementry school on up tells the story of alexander the great fucking around in afghanistan and getting taken out by avalanches. National geographic did a story on a ski resort in afghanistan, lifties had AK's, they had old ass skis from the solviet occupation, and the lift looked so ghetto, but there were a fair amount of people. I guess the afghani's have been skiing since the 80's. We are talking about the birth place of the hindu kush, still the dankest around. it only seems natural that it is also a wonderful place to ski.

What good would it of done? You know when we were paying $4 a gallon for gas Iraqi's were paying like 25 cents a gallon? Partly subsidized by US! We pay for iraqi's to have cheap gas? After all we spent liberating them? THANKS

What do you think is going to happen to that 1 trillion worth of stuff? News for everyone, Afghanistan is a sovereign country. More news, how much of that do you think is going to finance terrorists?? ALOT

I don't really know where to start, the post is pretty incoherent.

1.) The aim of the Iraq war is not to make money, it is to restore peace and stability to a country that had suffered for years under a monster. No debating that, Saddam was a disgusting human being. Helping the less fortunate is something America has done for a very long time, whether it be it's own or those from another country. So what if you took an extra 30 bucks on the chin to help stabilize their economy, that's the price you have to pay to live in one of the greatest countries on Earth.

2.) That mineral reserve is going to be controlled by the Afghan government and a foreign corporation. Now I don't think that the Afghan government is competent enough to keep money made off that from going into the hands of terrorists, but I do believe a foreign corporation will. Big companies protect their bottom line, if someone's fucking with them making money you're gonna bet there's going to be hell to pay.

hahaha please tell me you don't actually think this, the aim of the Iraq war was completely and 100% initiated on a financial basis in hopes of garnering oil and resources

it might not be any more, but initially it was. We're just there now because we'd be leaving a seriously fucked up country in our wake if we dipped in the current situation

idk if you believe this, but the iraq war was an invasion in an economical interesting country with existing, massive human rights violations.

ONLY human rights violations (as showed by my north corea/burma argument) dont seem poor, abused people to qualify for US-help.

If you do not want to be such a ignorant smuck, I would suggest reading about the TAPI pipeline, as well as how Bush's handlers were preparing for war in the area before 9/11.

Blackwater comes from the United States, they trained the Nisoor square shooters. I fail to see the connection. So a couple fucked up south american guys raped nuns, doesn't mean the school taught them to do that.

Al-Qaeda is far smaller than you've been led to believe, and the Pakistani government fucks their shit up on a regular basis. I know for a fact that vast factions of the government are not Al-Qaeda. They're too fucking incompetent to accomplish that, and Karzai wouldn't allow it.
