Bibles for porn

The Finnish free-thinker society just had a campaign where they would swap all religious literature for porn. It was a succes from their part and over 1000 religious books including school books and religious magazines were traded for porn mags. The Jesus people got all angry and had their own campaing, which was a failiour: only 3 porn magazines were bought in to be traded for bibles.

I dont have pics , but i was there to give away 3 school books and a random bible from our bookshelf.

 I'd like to hear some opinions about this.  i think it was a good way to get rid off those useless books

I always find it interesting that anybody who does not believe in religion/God likes to make the claim that anybody who does believe only does so because they are "brainwashed, ignorant, red-neck, non-thinkers." (minus one poster in this forum).

Somehow it is not possible for anybody to come to the realization, through intelligent thought and reflection, that God (whichever God that may be) is real, and they have chosen to try and live their life under this premise.

WTF difference does it make in your or anybody else's daily lives if I choose to believe that there is something bigger than me that we are unable to fully understand? Honestly answer that. How many times are you directly effected by religion on a day to day basis?

that's not it at all. i believe in something bigger than us that we are unable to understand. it just so happens that when people believe that that something is the christian god and that they need to follow certain rules and impose them on others, then yes, it is affecting others. religious beliefs have everything to do with politics and national policy.. and that's when it becomes a problem

I can think of very limited instances today in which religion plays a major role in national policy (ie-gay marriage [I live in Iowa where it is legal], stem-cell research [this is always changing].

Religion may effect the individual politician, in that it can shape one's moral view (ie-the current president and Rev. Wright [begin shitstorm, now]). But I do not believe that in today's society religion is a domination factor in the day to day policy making. If it were abortion, gay marriage, pre-marital sex, etc. would all be outlawed.

My point is, many try to state that religion is this big stiffling, mass of hate and ignorance that overwhelms their day to day life. Maybe I have been lucky in that is not my experience. I would bet that most people are able to make it throught he majority of their days without any religious interaction unless desired.

You do undertand that they are not rounding people up at gun-point and forcing them to trade in their bibles, right?

They are allowing people the freedom to read porn IF THAT IS WHAT THEY WANT, giving them true freedom of choice and thought.

I think that by this group doing this they are implying that religion does not allow you to think freely or critically. That the bible somehow brainwashes you.

So therefore, they are almost saying, "Please feel free to think freely, unless it is from a religious viewpoint."

I am a religious person, but I don't really make stunts like this into more that what they are, a cry for attention and publicity. Everyone knows that if you go and hold a "trade your bible for porn day, or burn a bible day, or for that matter, burn a Quran day, you are going to cause a shitstorm to some extent. It really doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

You live in logan? On the street I lived on last year There were 4 churches a one mile strip of road. 3 LDS and 1 ram shack looking Baptist church.

You missed my point. Why do something like this, or any other stunt, but to try and get attention and other people riled up. Are you trying to say that these people really believe in this cause (replacing Bibles with porn mags), or do you think they are doing it because they know it will upset a good number of people who look at this as an attack on something they hold sacred.

I personally take the attitude that if you ignore stupid shit like this, it will more or less just go away on its own. By getting upset and holding counter-rallies you just feed into their hype and prolong their 15 minutes in the spotlight.

its personal choice, and there are very degrees of religiousness (prbly not a word but you know what i mean). If everyone kept their religion to themselves, this world would be a much better place. not perfect by any means, but it would be a start

Well that is one way to look at it. But from my experiences what you have just described sounds more like our government than any church I have ever been affiliated with.

Also, it is a relief to know that all pedophiles can be found in a church somewhere. With this newfound knowledge it should be much easier to track them down... (such a weak argument against religion, you can do better).

I think their goal is to draw attention to their cause to a certain extent. They simply want people to question their religion, because so many people never have. It is not shitstorm worthy, however.

i'm religious, and i question my faith all the time, but no question has come up for me that has made me doubt what i believe (i believe in evolution, for instance, because the first 4 chapters of Genesis were written as metaphorical poetry, not as a literally scientific explanation of how the universe came into existence). i don't think you can truly believe what you believe without questioning it (anyone who doesn't question their faith is ignorant and brainwashed, imo), but there are better ways to encourage people to question what they believe than offering them porn in exchange for their bibles.

I never said all religious leaders were pedophiles. Just saying that a guy who talks all day about his imaginary friend, wears a robe and has unlimited access to little boy ass is probably a pedophile. I mean it's not like a huge outcry against auto mechanics or teachers for raping little kids. Percentage wise you are a lot more likely to get raped by a priest than any other profession.

The free-thinkers society is mostly about fun little gigs instead of dead seriousness. Every year they throw a rock in the Helsinki harbour to see if it floats - if it sinks, there will probably be snow in the winter months. Who knew?

Like some of you said, religions would not matter at all, if they weren't so tightly wound round modern societies and affecting the way people live their lives; there is morality within humans without the word of any "God" or some fellows who decided to write down some stories. I think the separation of church and state is, as a truthful statement, as realistic as communism.

And finally, Jodi, if you're gonna call out someone whose first language (nor second, actually) is not English based on one mistyped word out of an otherwise thoughtful and completely comprehensible post, you suck.

So what is your point? That there is a "higher power", but all organized religion is bad? That people who buy into religion/church are just sheep?

Also, did you personally have a bad experience with religion? (This may explain more to me).

I can only speak from my personal experiences. I feel better when I go to church and have the chance to just sit for an hour and reflect about what is important in my life. I enjoy the opportunities that my church offers to help others.

Are there issues with religion/churches? Absolutely. Any time a human being has the opportunity to lay their hands on something, it is going to eventually get messed up, that is human nature, we are all flawed.

I guess I just don't buy into the whole notion that organized religion is only here to control people and take their money.

If you want to respond with a legit answer feel free and we can continue this discussion. But if you just want to call me idiot or little prick again, just let it rest and we can try this some other time.
