Exactly... skiing and snowboarding (though mostly skiing) tends to be rather behind the times style wise.
The real reason kids wear baggy clothes is because they're afraid that tight pants will turn them gay or make their friends think they are.
But to address Molena's question,
Consider the influence other sports have had on skiing, particularly snowboarding since skiing tends to be a few years behind them, they are a good projection of what skiing will become.
For a more historic look into skiing trends you should look for a copy of Warren Miller's Higher ground (not the best skiing), but there's a part in it when Glen Plake talks about the decades and styles of skiing.
Also check the threads on NS, if you can bear sorting through the pages of hate, you'll find some information there, also watch some of the more independent ski movies of the past 4 or so years; because they don't have huge sponsors their riders have more freedom to wear what they want. Check out Hot Lunch, any 4bi9, Happypro etc... it'd also be worth it to check out the Voleurz movies and even Jon Olsson's blog. for snowboarding there's a plethora but try starting with myairblaster.com, tahoedangerzone.com and updownmagazine.com oh and yobeat.com those websites provide links to everything in snowboarding.
Props for choosing such a huge topic.
