um well tanners done a few other things for skiing aside from skiing... like armada and uh... being the most iconic skier for people outside our sport. he's like johnny moseley but not as good.

before you all go nuts... this is from the feb 2010 issue of freeskier with poll results from the 08/09 season (the one before this one). Tanner was indeed actively skiing that season until he got injured at the end of it.

Have Jossi, Bobby, or Andreas ever done anything noteworthy outside the park?  Until they do they don't belong in this discussion.

Sean Petit, Abma, Sage, Dan Tudor, Windsedt, Candide.....These guys are all good candidates. 

I might say Candide.  Although I thought he was somewhat over scored, he still killed it on the FWT, and won that red bull contest.  He also had an insane edit on Kamera.

armada isn't out of business bud. and he's still an ambassador for the sport. this is more than just comp. results or edits. its hard for anyone to really see that because we are so involved with the sport. and really, just because he's not on camera doesn't mean he's doing nothing for the sport.

Bobby Brown. While I'm not a huge fan of seeing one dude dominate the slopestyle scene, his consistency at nearly every comp of just demolishing the competition shows that not only does he have a lot of skiing talent, but he is strong in the clutch (IE when you only have two or three runs to throw down something tight)

Giving it to tanner is just... uhhhh... why?

fair point, but seeing as all he's done ON camera this year is (rightly or wrongly) shat all over what most people on this site think of as skiing, apologised for it, and then gone to Jamaica to smoke weed, sit on a beach and help some dudes make reggae (quite what tanner brings to the table in this respect is beyond me but w/e), i think it's safe to say that Tanner is not 2010 skier of the year. it would however be amusing to see a before/after photo of armada's director of marketting over the course of this season. my guess is that his/her hair will have turned about 17 shades in the direction of grey, assuming that is that he/she hasn't torn it all out.

as for Candide having been overscored in the FWT, i wouldn't say so. there has been a change in judging criteria recently in favour of smooth, controlled lines over high-risk, hyper exposed stuff, presumably based on what happened to Neal Valiton (RIP) 2 years ago, and Adrien Coirier last year, both in the Tignes FWT stop. And Candide's skiing this year in comps has been just that- fluid, controlled, fast and smooth as silk. In Verbier I swear I was half expecting him to stop halfway down the face, bust out a deckchair, order an espresso, smoke a blunt, read the back pages of the newspaper and then finish his run like nothing just happened. that's how comfortable he looked which, given that it was his first time skiing the most committing comp face (or any face for that matter) in the world (by miles), is pretty fucking amazing.

so yeah, as I say, nobody comes close to Candide this year.
