So I've been looking at video camera lately, and I really want a helmet cam. I know Go Pro makes a good, high quality HD head cam, but I was looking at another one called the ContourHD. Does anyone know anything about it? How does it preform, hows the picture on it, etc.
the contour hd is really nice in terms of low profile mounts. the go pro sticks on your head just waiting to get ripped off on a treebranch (had it happen to me with an old helmet hero) whereas the contour sits nicely on your goggle strap and is lower profile. the problem with the contour is probably that it's not quite as good quality as the gopro and it tends to really wash out in bright light. they just released a filter kit for it so you can put on 37mm polarizers which help so much, but the light correction and color adjustment is still pretty weak on it. so gopro is slightly sharper quality, better colors, much worse helmet mounts (also opens up to better other mounts, i.e. chest) and less user friendly
here's a video shot with the 720p contour hd and some color correction done on a few frames as a test. i'm using the goggle strap mount with dual lock on my helmet and the back of the mount to keep it from shaking really bad, great system, otherwise you get brutal shake
also the infamous macmahooon can be spotted skiing at 1:19, it was a rare chance to see him and even more rare to catch him on film without spooking him!! yes, the jesus of ns has been caught on video
Okay, I know this may be kinda ghetto. But Connor (OP) you could buy a HD Flip Video Camera, or Regular. Then buy the tripod for it. Then tape the Tripod and HD Flip to your helmet. Because the Flip Camera itself is pretty waterproof. I'm sure it'd work perfectly. Kinda ghetto but yeah. Maybe a TINY BIT cheaper than a Go Pro.
Hahaha that looks so stupidly retarded I want it, but I don't want a Flip. The Flip has built in memory, and you can't expand it as far as I know. I want something a little smaller and more water proof, with easy access to helmets, poles, chests, etc.
The only thing bad about the contour is that its not water proof but you can get a lexan/poly case for it. But if video quality is your main concern then choose the contour. It also has 2 aiming lazers which is kinda pointless in my opinion. Its very easy to use and can be used with the bulkyest of gloves.
That's what kind of drew me to the Contour, was the simplicity of it. Do you know how much the lexan/poly cases are? And will the goggle clip still work if I wear my goggles under my helmet?
Its cost $30, good case for that price, you can scuba drive with it pretty far down and get some really good image quality. And no I'm pretty sure it wont work if you put your gogggles under your helmet, Im not a big fan of the helmet strap cuz you get a little bit a shakes if you go past 50 mph I have noticed.
We shot this whole vid with the contour hd early this season. Its nice because it has the goggle strap mount which I like quite a bit. This vid is compressed a bit, but you can see some follow cam and some POV.
