I know that there are a lot of photography gurus on this site.

if im not mistaken, its just a photo sequence shot at 8 frames per second, where the shutter speed was 1/500th of a second, where the flash went off for each frame because it was wireless synced to the camera. oh and it was shot in RAW format, as opposed to JPEG or something. i dont know why its so special though, i guess its just never been done before

yeah pretty much.
the main impressive thing is the number of flash activations and the RAW format is gigantic vs. JPEG.

everyone shoots in RAW now dude. It is sorta the first time someone bothered to make a flash sync so fast nothing that big visually but a small hill to climb technically because it takes so much power and emits a large amount of heat

word. I mean it was cool, and I could see how if you were into photography the record would be really awesome to own. but otherwise, the shots looked pretty much like any other sequence i've ever seen. but what the hell do i knowww

the difference would be normally you can only shoot sequences that fast (8 fps) with natural light. flashes normally cant fire that rapidly and stay synced, or not overheat.

This is really impressive and props to O'Connell. Chase Jarvis did something very similar to this last summer in New Zealand with Simon Dumont and Colby West for a San Disk shoot. Jarvis was only able to get 8fps at 1/250s and he had some good results. What makes this amazing is O'connell was able to get a full stop more at 1/500s. Not an easy thing to do, not to mention those Broncolor packs are extremely expensive.

I don't understand how one flash can fire that quickly. Surely you need a load of flashes in the same spot? Nice snaps and all, but it seems like it's possible if you have all the expensive toys and a little know how...?

The crazy part is that not many cameras can sync a flash at 1/500. To get flashes to sync at 1/500 AND fire 10-20 times at 8 fps is not so much impressive...just very expensive.

the 8fps just means he had a lot of flashes, or recycled them very fast, this can be done with money. If that later, then that means he was able to have his transmitter send out differently coded signals for alternating frames.

The RAW part just means he is using a fancy camera with the capability to shoot large sequences in RAW.

The 1/500 part is cool. since the max for most flash sync is 1/250, at 1/500 he is still requiring the flash to stop the motion. I don't really know all the benifits of being able to go 1/500, other then the obvious of exposure, since I have not played with flashes much.


for the most part its a a stunt.

Pretty sweet! Pretty expensive too!

The impressive bit is a flash system that is portable and can cycle that quickly without burning out. Don't know about any transmitter issues but I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem as TTL circuits respond in nanoseconds (nano= one trillionth). Just looks like a lot of money, but as long as it doesn't cost me I'm happy enjoying the shots

In the vid it said they were going to do some HDR sequence shots but I didn't see any sequences that looked HDR in the vid. He might not have processed the images to there yet but HDR sequence shots would be SICK.

you can overheat flashes from just firing a them a few times. thats a few hundreths of a second. you couldnt leave anything remotely close to that bright on for that long without it blowing out.

most cameras work with flashes at 1/250th of a second shutter speed or slower. so, if you can get a 1/500th shutter speed to sync with your flash, you're killin it. and to make it do a burst you're killin it even more. basically, it gives you all the light you need at a speed preferable for sequences.
