Mouth guards

I just found out that mouth guards lower the chances of you getting a concussion. Not that I plan to wear one anytime soon when skiing, but I just wanted to tell others this fact.

I should look into getting a mouth guard to wear for my every day life.. That may solve some of my problems..

i dont like mouth guards. cant breathe or talk properly in them. and they make my jaw hurt for some reason.

and mtw, what else did you think mouthguards were for? to prevent concussions is pretty much why you wear them. maybe protect your teeth a little.

graham wears one while skiing.

they only work if you get them custom made for you. generic ones or other peoples mouth gaurds (eewwwww) don't protect you from a concussion at all.

what do you mean custom made?
you buy a mouth guard, you mold it, then it's pretty much custom.
they protect from the impact of your bottom teeth hitting your top teeth and rattling your brain, or vice versa.
doesnt help when you just slam your noggin tho.
still, im sure it really helps a lot.

Really? I've never bought a mouth guard. I've heard though that you're supposed to go to an orthodontist to get them made just for you. I probably just don't know what I'm talking about :)

yeah you put em in hot water and they soften up. then put in your mouth and bite down, they might be good if youre trying something new, but for regular skiing, nah

I knocked out some of my teeth a few years ago and had to get a bridge put in. IT cost more than I have ever spent on skiing, so my mom got me a mouth gaurd from the dentist. It doesn't affect my breathing, but I salivate more. My mom tried to get me to wear it skiing, but there is no way. I already bought a helmet and that was enough for me.

Ya i had to wear one for rugby. Its like when you fall hard and your jaw slams shut so hard that it rattles your skull. The mouth gurad helps soften the blow.

i had to have one for softball...and for soccer our team colors are black and purple so our coach got us purple mouthguards...but we never wear them

to the dude who made the thread about noone listening to him 'cause they think he's a newbie and only has a few hundred posts.. - see - I'm not a newbie, everyone here knows me, and they STILL don't listen to what I have to say even though it's right. stupid people (well, I guess just dspin7x...)


Ya, and the dude who said 'i'm not wearing the mouthgaurd, I already went out and got a helmet, that's enough'... If you're going to wear the helmet (and chances are it's a helmet that looks dumb - 'cause most do) you might as well put the mouth gaurd in. 'cause helmets don't prevent most concussions, only the ones where you hit your head. Majority of concussions are caused by your teath vibrating your skull.

2 years ago I got a mad concussion (don't remember 2 days or so of my life) while skiing... I was wearing my helmet but it didn't do any good.

My friend just started wearing one on his tramp b/c his sister fell on her head and her teeth went through the mouth and lips, it was sick!

First of all daryll i didnt know if you were being serious with that post or a sarcastic like every other post of yours. So my bad i didnt know.

And my dad who has been a doctor for 20 years laughed when i asked him about the mouthgaurd thing and said thats pretty much bullshit, he just laughed at me when i asked him if its from your teeth chattering together, unless daryll you would as usual know more then someone who has worked in the ER for 15 years and surgery for the past 5 years.

ok, hmmm, listen to a guy who is a doctor or someone who has gotten a preaty good concussion from his teeth banging togeather, and tons of other people who do infact know that teeth cause concussions. no offence to your dad - but he's not the brightest doctor or he just doesn't deal with sports injuries...

According to my doctor, I'm supposed to start wearing a mouth guard for anything even slightly related to sports. She even wants me to wear one when I go biking!!!

Your Dad and educated man, doesn't know that your teeth banging together can cause a concussion. Where my stupid brother in grade 9 does. Then you said that you don't see the connection between your father, the doctor, not knowing something that is pretty much common knowledge and me poking fun at the education system. You see? it wasn't like I was making fun of Americans. I thought it was appropriate because after all you called all Canadains dumb.

ya if u hit your mouth hard u can get a conction but if u just get hit in the back of the head the only thing that will help is a helmet its kinda hard to get hit in the chin while sking though...

the only way a mouthgard protects against concusions is on impacts that start at your chin. if your head is hit anywhere else it would do nothing. And why should I care if I look stupid wearing a helmet? I ski for me. I could care less what people watching think. I don't spend money to impress people that I will never see again in my life.

yea i guess it was a joke... wasnt a funny one but i guess. And the american education system isnt really the same as goign to a top medical school for 8 years. And are you really making fun of american medical schools becaues if you are you would be the ignorant one, the United States AND Canada have some of the best medical schools and facilities in the world so i dont see how you could knock either one of them. And if youre going to say i said all canadians were dumb that was a joke just like your joke i was just saying that to prove a point like you were too i guess... But back to the original point im just saying ive had 5 concussions and all of them have not had anything to do with my teeth, its just from getting hit on the top of side of my head always and then your brain going through the protective liquid stuff that surrounds your brain and smashing into your skull, but im not saying the teeth chattering thing isnt completley wrong wrong... Itd be nice if people could discuss somethign like this without everyone getting all offensive and starting to make fun of other people but whatever i dont really care

I got a mouth guard when I played field hockey (we had to wear them), and I got mine done at the dentist. He made me bite onto this mould thing and then made the guard up later. It was purple and is really cool! You can't talk properly with them in, but it didn't matter with hockey coz we just yelled at each other anyway!
Fairy girl: its law out here that we have to wear helmets when we go biking. We can get fined by the police if we don't.

We have that law, but hardly any of the teenagers here pay attention to it. I always wear my helmet. I've cracked two of them.

...and i am sure you can remember exactly what happened during each one of those concussions eh? If so, you haven't had any serious concussion.

I myself have had 4 serious concussions (serious meaning losing conciousness and being rushed to the hospital) and four other non-serious concussions (all diagnosed and treated by a ER doctor...not that that means anything because most of them are overworked and could give a shit about their job) and i can tell you that your dad is either 1) very naive 2) stupid 3) your dad's diploma is from buttfuck school of buttfucking.

One of the times i blacked out was after i caught my ski pole in the jaw, causing my teeth to smash together. I cracked two molars, hairline fracture in my jaw, and a very severe concussion that almost made my brain swell. Anyone who says differently about the teeth issue must have a degree from 'BSB' :-)

and ya, there's a 'law' to wear helmets while biking, but i make fun of people who wear helmets biking... unless they are like, doing some hardcore biking... but if you're just going down the road or soemthing than no.
hell, i don't even wear a helmet skiing anymore. oh well.

I just got a mouth guard on friday, but I didn't melt it enough, so now it just has little bumps from my teeth and doesn't fit well and it to fuckin early to hink clearly so i'll wrap this shit up.
