Skiing with music and etiquette

Hello all,

I am curious to find some opinions on a certain matter. Here's an example: You are skiing with one or more friends, you are NOT listening to music but your other friend(s) are. As a result of their music, they cannot hear you and thus, cannot engage in conversation during lift rides and during each run itself.

TO ME, not only does doing so display poor lift riding and skiing etiquette, but it is  also a very anti-social way of skiing. Why not just ski by yourself if your gonna ignore your friends and listen to music? it is rude and disrespectful to be skiing with music blasting while being unable to communicate with your friends during the course of the day.

Granted, i understand some people like to get "pumped up" and "stoked" when they ski, and i agree, but i also think there is a time and place for that (skiing alone) not skiing with friends.

Again this is all my opinion, but I'd like to hear some of yours

I always listen to music when I ski. It's about finding that right volume for me. Loud enough so I can hear it when I'm hitting the park or cruising and get pumped, but quiet enough so I can still have conversations with friends/randoms on the lift... i

I like to talk to people on the lift too. I've listened to music, but I keep it low and turn in down when I'm on the lift and such.

Yeah I like riding with a crew that isn't absorbed in their own music. There's something about the sounds of the mountains too that I like to be able to hear. I do like to shred to music if I'm by myself learning something though. Pump up factor for sure.

holy shit yes..  and when some guy is about to run in to you.. but many a time ive called drop and been in the in runn and had some one next to me "tuned out" and im like tuff shit im not stopping and then they get mad and im like dude call your fuckin drop and im right.

I don't really care... until we get out into the backcountry. Mostly everyone I go out there with has the same mentality. If you want to listen to music on the uphill, it's fine, but you are NOT allowed to listen to music while skiing, or if you're in an exposed section of uphill track.


Inbounds? I find it annoying when people listen to music while skiing, but it's something you gotta deal with I guess.

i have an inline volume control on my headphone wire.

chair - turn it down
hike - keep it on but quiet
shred - find a tune and jam to it

Word, blast it in one side, listen on the other side. I always listen with my right ear too, so when i go deaf i still got a whole 'nother ear.

on the rare occasion i do listen to music, my headphones have a volume control switch on the cord, so i can conveniently turn the music off on the chair lift, or whenever i need to.

keep it low enough so that you can hear people talking, but high enough so that you can still hear the music. if you're using headphones instead of buds, wear them slightly off your ears

So what you're saying is that your skiing warrants everyone to fuck off? you must be the worst person to ski with ever. get off your high horse and try to make friends...its people like you that i hate skiing with (but you don't care...do you, and i quote, "fuck yall if you want me to hear...". You're the man.

forget what i said about making friends. Nobody is going to want to be your friend with that attitude. It is evident that you don't care about friendship..only your skiing, which I'm sure is absolutely sensational!

One ear in, one ear out. I'll probably be deaf in my left ear when I'm older.

The worst is when you get a gaper sitting on the landing of a jump listening to music, and there are ten people at the top of the drop in yelling at him to get off the landing, but he just sits waiting for the song to finish...

Def. one ear only. And no skullcandies. Even in one ear those things make it hard to hear.  I use really cheap shitty headphones so I can still hear around me. 

As anyone that rides with me knows, chairlift conversations are AT LEAST half the fun of riding.

if im riding with in ear headphones, ill just do one ear in and one out. but if i have icons in i just put them around my neck and talk to people, and can still hear the music

i love to listen to music when i ski, but like stated, having conversation is all part of the fun. i wear a helmet so i just turn up my headphones until i can can hear them and then just put them in the ear hole on my helmet that way the music is more of a background noise and i can still hear my boys talking. i also keep one ear open, just in case.

i always ski with my scullcandy icons blasting rap at 100% around my neck. i can hear it clearly but i can hear everything/anyone else around me clearly and can carry conversations easily.

i usually just find a good level of volume where you can still be stoked on tunes but at the same time hear someone when they are talking to you. The only thing that gets in the way is music that is being played from the parks speakers....

1. Get Tune-Ups or Audex Earpads (cheap, like 15-20 bucks)
2. Utilize in-line or on-earpad mute button when not actually skiing, or any time you want to hear
3. Unmute when you need to rage

On the lift with friends it should always be off

While skiing it can be on but only if necessary, it can get annoying while skiing too

my icons stopped working in one ear and that was quite useful but they also have a pause/play button on the cord(icon 2s) but they stopped working completely so i am doing one ear bud or no music now

I just ride with tuneups in my giro

just find the perfect volume... where i can hear the music when riding but still here my surroundings. and turn it right down when talking the the lifts.

when i ski with music, i usually use iCons or lowrider headphones, with no helmet. This way, if i see someone talking to me, the music is easily taken off your ear by being moved back, enabling you to hear perfectly.

i ski with a shuffle in this thing that allows me to put it on my wrist like a watch so i just pause it or turn it down to talk to people or when im with people.

i listen to it low enough with just stock ipod earbuds so i can still hear people. most of my friends don't even know i'm listening to music. i usually clip my shuffle to my helmet strap too so i can just pause it too

get a sessions jacket in collaboration with skullcandy and then you can controll your music from ur wrist..i love my M4 metallica jacket with speakers in the coller
