Shinbang 101

Hey NS. Recently I have noticed lots of threads about shinbang and people wondering how to prevent it. I suffered from chronic shinbang for years before I fixed it, so hopefully I can share some tips that might help you out.

Shinbang is caused by landing backseat. However simply saying "don't land backseat" is not a very good solution, because everyone lands backseat occasionally. It's just something that happens. I made a youtube video (that is pretty long) which might help you out. I will summarize it in writing below while my video uploads.




If you already have shinbang:

The only thing that is going to heal shinbang is time. You are going to want to focus on alleviating the pain and preventing it from getting worse. Make sure you deal with it quickly, people with shinbang tend to ski backseat, which makes things much worse.

My recommendations are:

-Add padding! Either pad your whole boot tongue or build up pads around the sore area
-Booster Straps
-ICE, ICE, ICE
-Ibuprofen

Tips to prevent shinbang from occurring or returning:

-Make sure your boots fit well. Go to a bootfitter
-Strengthen your upper leg muscles to help with backseat landings
-Less forward lean on your boots
-Soften your boot
-Note that the last two probably will help shinbang but might not be the best for other aspects of your skiing. Make sure you know what you want before you make any permanent boot adjustments.

Good stuff mate, I'm staying a season in Whistler and I've been dealing with shinbang "fibulabang" .

I think it's a good video +k :P


Right now I've got booster straps, padding in my boot, footbeds etc and riding on painkillers all day . Do you know if there's anyway to but padding in to protect my fibula (side/back of my leg) instead?

I know my cause isn't as common tho.

theres more than one type of shinbang. and the one from landing backseat comes from the flexing of the actual shinbone itself. BOOSTER STRAPS wont do anything to prevent this. only properly fitting boots and minimal room to move your foot and shin will am i not right?

ive never gotten shin bang before, but all the people i ski with have and from talking with them, it seems to me that if ur power strap and top buckle are as snug as possible against the top of ur leg, you get more cushion and less bang, it helps to suport you leg something like that, either way.  try it, seems to help mose people

the best thing i have found is stretching and strengthening your lower leg muscles.  doing like toe stands for a few minutes every day helps alot!

yeah I tried to mention that. The kind of shinbang you drew is the most common one for sure. Landing backseat causes it, but once you have it they pain comes when you flex into your boot. Padding your boot doesn't prevent it from coming, but definitely helps dull the pain. If it doesn't hurt as much to be forwards, you will ski more forwards and your shins will start healing.

I also explained the other kind of shinbang which is actually caused by hitting the front of your boot. This one won't happen at all if your boots fit/ are tight enough.

dont take the advil while skiing its causes you not to know if your hurting your self more

you will still feel pain on advil, it will just numb it alittle. any injury you cant feel because of advil isnt really even an injury.

I don't know if there is any way to pad the back of your boot. Adding pads the back of your leg wont really do anything to help it (other than possibly keeping you more forward.) Have you tried putting foam around the less sore parts, to stop the sore part of your shin from hitting the boot front? I think this works better than just cushioning the whole front.

Another really good thing you can do is put a small heel lift in your boot. I totally forgot to put this in the video but what it does is kind of move the sore area to a different part of the tongue, which can help a lot. It never really solved my shinbang but it would at least move the sore part of my shin to a lower impactplace on the tongue. I remember every two weeks I would put in the heel lift and then ski for a few weeks and then take it out.

So you might want to try that

I used to get horrible shinbang, but now I just tighten my boots up to the very last clip and pull my strap as tight as I can, and it has gotten way better.

Ibuprofen(advil) actually does speed up the healing process. Next time you have shinbang, before you go to bed take 2 pills of ibuprofen and when you wake up you will notice a huge difference. Without ibuprofen it usually takes about 10 days before my shinbang fully subsides, when i use ibuprofen, i notice a huge improvement after just 1 night and about 5 days to fully heal.

Two things you missed:
A lot of people talk about taping your shins/ calf with medical tape?
And haha yeah riding switch. One year I got shin splints, and then bruised my heels. That's the year I learned to land/ ski switch properly... Literally ski switch until it's good again, no need to stay home.

+k thanks alot good idea skiing switch haha can't wait until i buy new boots... When i bought my boots that i use right now i didn't have a clue about anything.... And there was no bootfitter it was just some random teenager at the ski store...

Sorry if you keep seeing me post this, but people keep asking about shinbang and these are the main causes of shinbang. You need to know that not only 1 thing causes it. If you have it, examine this list:

-not having a footbed
-boot is wrong size (usually too big than too small)
-continually landing backseat
-having a gap between the tongue of the boot and your shin, either because you have chicken legs or simply because the tongue just doesn't match up to your leg
-boots that are too soft for you
-boots that are too stiff for you
-boots that are too low on your leg

so, if you do the opposite of what I just wrote, shinbang is most likely not going to happen to you. As you can tell, a properly fit boot is your best bet against getting shinbang.
