So, I'm quitting my job

Yeah, this is a rant, and craigslist didn't feel appropriate.

My work hired me at the end of July. It was more of just something to do so I wouldn't get too sick of working from home all the time. They then informed me they hired me to basically be in charge when the manager went into labor and her vacation time after. I then informed them that maybe they should hire someone else since I didn't really need the job (I have a pretty steady web design business) and would be leaving immediately after to go to my better job at the ski shop.

Anyway, they asked me to stay and said they would pay me more. So I figured ok, it would look good on my resume in the future.

Well, both of my managers went on vacation since the lady went into labor (my 2 mangers are engaged and just had their baby). They were supposed to hire someone before they left. They did not. They were supposed to take care of everyones health insurance before they left. They didn't. So I got left with doing tons of paperwork for everyones insurance and was short a person leaving me working over 48 hours a week + full time business classes + my web design business. I had only agreed to 3 days a work. I was doing 6.

What makes it worse is they just hired someone. I was there during the wage discussion. Turns out the fucking lied to me about my wage and said I was getting $1.50 an hour more than the regular staff. LIES! I was getting the exact same wage as everyone else and doing way more work.

Then... 3 weeks ago I requested today, friday, and saturday off. I always have friday's and saturdays off so it should have been no big deal.

I was planning on staying up till around 2 am studying, getting some loving from my current guy, then waking up at 11 or so, driving 5 hours to LA and taking my midterm at school tonight.

Last night someone calls in sick and they inform me that I have no choice in the matter and need to work this morning at 7am since im the "manager"

I was absolutely infuriated, canceled on my guy (I now haven't seen him for a week and a half and wont see him for another 5 days) didn't get in the studying time I wanted because I had to be in bed by 11 so that I could be functioning today. I didn't sleep at all because I took a nap after work yesterday and was expecting to stay up late.

Then I woke up went outside to put my stuff in my car. My dog sees another dog and chases after it. Sadly this was a homeless dog and my dog chased it for about 5 blocks with me running after it in a tshirt in awesome 20 degree weather.

I did get to study this morning though,but now I'm going to be exhausted while driving 5 hours and will probably be even more tired when I take my midterm which will totally affect my performance.

So yeah, I'm quitting when I get back. Does that seem extreme?


Cliff notes: Found out my job has been lying to me about me making more than everyone else and been giving me way more work and responsibility. Because of it it totally wrecked my night and my mood and now I'm going to do worse on my midterm today because of it.

Just needed to get that out of my system.

IDK why I just read all of that, but I woulda quit a long time ago in your situation. I definitely would not have went in for them and cancelled on my girl and fucked up on my sleep and studying because of it.

didn't find out until yesterday that they were paying me the same as everyone else.

I might work sunday night so they can figure shit out.

I start up again at the ski shop on the 16th. I could really really use the week up. I have fallen so far behind on my web work cause of that job.

I guess I just felt I couldn't quit and leave them in the position of no manager regardless of how much they were taking advantage of me. Small town, super important to not burn bridges like that.

Quit, if they were not all up front and honest with you, I would be out of there. Sure there are some things they can do, but what you described is over the top.

Yeah. Sad part is that I didn't need the job to begin with and I clearly stated that to them.

I make a very acceptable wage with out having a job.

I just love my job at the ski shop too much to not keep doing it. I don't make much there but I really do love it and they give me really really good health insurance.

No, lying about wages is a breach of contract... They cant do anything with a void contract (if they made you sign one)

They have been paying what they said they were going to pay me. They just told me that it was more than what everyone else was getting. Which it wasn't. It was the exact same.

I would demand more pay like promised.  If they don't want to pay you the difference I would then quit.  Sounds like you are being over worked and under paid.

That's terrible.  I'm a super loyal worker but if I had to put up with any of that shit I would have quit long ago.  You shouldn't have to put up with that bullshit.  Especially since it's not your carreer, just a job.  Get the hell out, tell them they treated you like shit and that's why you're quitting.  They are the ones being completely unreasonable not you.  Or tell them the only way you're staying is if you get a gigantic raise/bonus.

^^^ the welcome to management part is so true...and its probably because youre a girl that they bummed you on the wage. So - coming from experience...I guess Im saying not only welcome to management....but welcome to management as a woman and making roughly 86 cents on the dollar that every man makes:-P

I would have played my cards differently.

If I have the day off I don't pick up the phone for work related shit. I work at an ISP, and our admin even does this......and he has an Iphone. In other words he can fucking work while taking a ride at disney. So yeah, shit can break...and shit won't be repaired till Monday morning.

I would have been like I wasn't scheduled for this weekend and **insert lie here that makes my location 3+ hours away from home**, and been like physically do it, I won't be there for (hours). Then continue to say " I know I am the manager, but does this mean I am oncall 24 hours a day? Because If I am...I want to be paid like it........"


Plus yeah that sucks you make the same as everyone else. I've been working 20 months without a raise, although my employer keeps saying we have no money and blah blah.

One guy has been there 2 years without a raise.

All this does to me is make me want to go on the job hunt for something better........

I dunno I have shit advice here, because all I want to do is bitch about my job now.

To the OP. I can relate to the employer lying about your wage thing. I had a summer job lined up at a city pool as a lifeguard. last minute my employer called me and told me the pools would be unable to open ( drain problems) and that if I wanted to work in maintance they could hook me up with a job there. Seeing that I really needed the job I took it. They promised me that I would still get a raise ( the lifeguards went from 8 to $10 dollars an hour) and that I would be making the same as the other maintance workers. Well I got my first pay check and it turns out there still paying me 8 dollars an hour. I called my manager and asked him about it and he told me that was what he had originally promised and acted pissed that I was bothering him. I let it go becuse I really needed the job and the work was easy but it was very frustrating that I was promised a certain wage and then they went behind my back and lowered it without telling me.  Anyway sorry for the Saga haha
