actually worked out great for me. my car will be paid off right before my loan payments kick in.
I would rather own a decent car with no payments and be making student loans than be making student loans and have a car payment.
Just need to make sure you can afford your car payment during school. My first one was a a 8 year old GTI with only 50,000 miles on it. Great car and a $150 a month payment. Then I went to my impreza with higher payments, but I will own it %100 percent in february.
And besides, having a decent car saved me soooo many times. Moving constantly, driving an 112 miles round trip to go skiing, driving 700 miles roundtrip to go to ski competitions, having reliable transportation to get to my job, and having a vehicle that could handle the off roading trips to get to archaeology sites.
Most of the people at my school got newer cars before college or in their first/second years. I did go to somewhat of a commuter school though. 25,000 students 6,000 on campus.
