It's a sailing term, but i don't know how exactly it transferred over to snowboarding/skiing. I just remember sal masekala saying "taking down the jib" all the time at the x-games 10 years ago. "taking down the jib" is something you due to transfer the sail of a boat from one side to another.

the jib is the sail the small sail in front of the mast (the big pole). Taking down the jib would just be taking it down.

It derives from the Latin: jiberitas. Which is a term to describe how the ancient Greeks would slide up and down each other's rails after a hot and sweaty battle with the Persians (see 300).

I assume we got it from snowboarding, which probably means some skateboarders used it at some point. I'm pretty sure skiers didn't make it up.

Pretty sure the term was coined by snowboarder Nick Perata back in the late 80s. I used to edit the Standard Snowboard Show and we had a segment with a bunch of guys sliding an old pipe up on Mt. Rose and discussing the origins of it all.
