Today I had an experience that really made me think about how far I want to step it up with skiing. I was doing a backflip off a decent sized kicker with no light whatsoever, and I just lost myself in the air, cause everything around me was white. I extended and hoped for the best, but instead I came down directly on my head, and I fucked up the muscles in my back so bad that most movement brings on searing pain. Now, I'm lucky because the muscles will heal soon enough, and I could have been paralyzed, but it's made me think. An accident can happen anytime, and you can ruin the rest of your life by crashing the wrong way or at the wrong time. Is it worth it to you to step it up as far as you can for skiing when you know that you could ruin the rest of your life at any moment? Or is it better to just lay low and not have to worry about permament injury while still enjoying skiing-just not at such a high level?

First of all, backflips are one the the most dangerous tricks you can do. You are totally upside down for the most amount of time possible for any trick. Not to say that they aren't fun, they are one of my favorite tricks, especially to throw off like a 50 footer. Greatest feeling on this earth. But, since they are so dangerous, you should never even attempt one when the light is not absolutely perfect. Even if there are just some clouds, that is enough to cause you to completely lose your air sense.
Also, you have to make the decision for yourself about whether it is worth it or not. I know for me, I push myself to an extent. I will not just go out on the slopes and try a trick ive never done before, out of the blue, unless its an endless pow pow booter in the bc. There is a progression to that. First, you should be able to do it on a trampoline, solidly. Then, take it to a water ramp. After you have it dialed there, take it to the bc pow. When you have done all theose things, you are ready to take it to the hard pack of the park. You can get royally messed up in the park, and if you do things the right way, you can minimize that risk.

see, the thing is, i dont want to sound like an ass, but that was poor judgemnent on your part. Its not a matter of pregressing at a solid rate, its just a matter of doing so on unsketchy jumps, and good landings, with good light.

yeah, and those pros are gonna have a pretty shitty life when they get old cus their body's just gonna fall apart. i read this article about retired football players and how all the impact that they took when they were young caught up to them. I think its best to do wut ur comftorable with in not so great conditions, just make it stylie, and then in good conditions, push it. you have to accept that even in good conditions, or doing simple tricks, there is a good chance that you could get hurt.

listen to the pros. they always say build up to a point. dont just go out and try a rodeo on your first day. thats why its called progression. do it at a rate that your most comfortable doing it at. i think, its ok to push yourself sometimes.

i think everybody on this site can agree that skiing means a lot to them
for me personally, i think skiing has made life a hell of a lot better and i feel like theres nothing i cant handle after a day of skiing
but if u r so passionate about something, why would u want to possibly end it all by doing something u arent prepared to do?
