no because the facebook status update is generally used for someone's "status" AKA what they are doing. Twitter is just a form of content distribution. Unfortunately some people use twitter to announce to the world what they are doing, but those are the boring kinds of people that you should quickly unfollow.
well i guess i can't say it's "dumb" considering its a simple idea that has become extremely popular and widely used and all that.. but i just don't see the point in knowing what robert pattinson ate for breakfast. And i know that that's not all of what twitter is for but i guess i'm just not a fan of it. why not just blog?
cause blogs aren't real-time and are a lot of work. Say you have 500-600 sources that you want to follow for content. Reading 500-600 blogs is pretty time consuming even with RSS solutions on the other hand. I only follow maybe 20 RSS feeds in reader and I still spend maybe 10 minutes a day reading them. Twitter on the other hand is only short snip its of information, it is easy to follow 500-600 sources on twitter without being overwhelmed.
People need to wake up and realize that twitter is NOT a place to find out "what people are doing". No one cares what you are doing for the most part.
I do use RSS, mainly with google reader. And it is great. But as I mentioned above I can only reasonably follow maybe 20 sources with RSS. Twitter on the other hand I can easily skim a few hundred sources without being overwhelmed. It is two different techniques for distributing content.
i guess i just didn't give it a good enough chance then. it's just that the twitter i've seen is chad johnson saying he's eating lunch at training camp, gilbert arenas is chillin in downtown LA, or my friend harry is watching tv. I guess i just don't know who to follow.
yeah those are the kinda posters to AVOID following, unless for some bizarre reason you are interested in that crap haha. This is why twitter gets a bad name. People see others using that way and thinks that is all it is good for. It would be like saying the internet sucks when the only websites your friend shows you are meatspin and rick roll. The beauty of twitter is you just follow what you are interested in. Personally I use it mainly for news/comedy. So I follow people who post funny content or people who post interesting news. But there are lots of ways to use it. Others like to get photography discussion, celebrity gossip, movie reviews, etc. You customize it so you see the content you are interested in, similar to an RSS except much simpler.
Status updates and twitter updates are completely different methods of distribution. The form factor is the same (short text messages) but the content is different. Plus in order to subscribe to someones facebook status is to friend them, you cannot subscribe to someones facebook status who you don't know.
Celebrities on the platform isn't what makes Twitter unique at all. In fact only a couple years ago every celebrity was promoting their Myspace pages.
I definitely think Twitter has a big PR issue. No one seems to understand what twitter is. Which is funny since it is so simplistic. It isn't a website to track celebrities and find out what pointless things (like "at the mall" your friends are doing (unless for some bizarre reason you are interested in that stuff).
