What the hell are skins and how are they used.

always wondered this, what do they do?

they are like fish scales
if you rub them the wrong way, it stick into you

so when you slide your foot with the "scales", it slides smoothly
but when you push it the wrong way, it lifts the scales and digs in to the snow so when going up hill, the foot not sliding up the mountain stays in place instead of sliding down hill.

Think of it like rubbing a short haired cat. Rub it the right way and your hand goes over smooth, rub it the wrong way and the hairs will resist.

i asked why you would walk up a mountain WITH YOUR SKIS ON. insted of just carrying your skis.

still dont get it haha, dont really matte to me right now i guess, im a visual learner.

Because your skis weigh at least 10 pounds with light weight binders on, and every step you take, you are lifting ten pounds, and so if you climb a big mountain, you would be lifting lot of elephants worth of skis. Plus skins can glide, which makes going up the mountain faster. And no, they are not only for CC skis, they are for all mountain/superfat pow skis, or anything in between.

you can also skin with teles. and skinning is so much easier and faster but the skins are kind of expensive. and you cant do it when the snows too deep or too steep.

dude it's common sense, think about surface area. your boots will dig into the snow every step whereas skis float on top, it's like 100 times less work

if you stick one finger into a piece of bread, it will penetrate. if you put your whole palm on the bread and push, it will just smoosh it down and not actually go in
