C.A.R.S. What should I get?

All dealerships are giving me $4500 trade-in for my 1995 Dodge Caravan.  Until now, I was gonna get a 2003 Forester with 100k on it for $6000.  Now, with the C.ar A.llowance R.ebate S.ystem, my parents are having me look at newer cars.

So now I am wondering what I should get.  I would love to have AWD but new Subarus are out of the picture.  Are there any other cars I can look at that have the sportyness and snow-mastering abilities of a  Subaru?  I saw an AWD Ford Fusion the other day, but I want to look at a Rabbit, Golf, civic, or other 'cheaper' car.

Come on car experts of NS, help me get a nice new car.

Honestly, I was gonna look at the '03 Forester today with high hopes.  My Dad went to play cards with the owner and some of his buddies last night --thats how we found about their Forester in the first place--  to advance our deal.  As of yesterday, I was gonna look at that car, as of today, I am not.


And to the other poster commenting on the trade-in;  Google 'C.A.R.S' to see the great deal they are putting out.

Just to let you know you have to get a NEW car that gets 28 MILES or OVER to qualify for the 4500. That being said i just got a 09 civic through the same program. it doesnt have all wheel drive like i wanted but i gets 35 miles to the gallon.

does the car HAVE to get 18mpg or less to be able to trade it in? cuz my 1992 BMW 318i (wonderful car, real piece of shit) averages like 20.

I think it has to be 10 mpg's over your previous car. And the car your looking to buy has to be BRAND  NEW or has never been titled in anyones name.

It has a 3.0l engine, not the 3.3, my dad just want to the Kia place and they said it was a no-go.  Bunch of bull shit if you ask me because the Soul gets nearly twice the MPG's.

2003 Forester it is.  Thing is, the previous owners never cleaned it and it has pitted wheels, me and my dad have some work to do when I get it.

At first I was skeptical, but when I could get a new car with a warranty for the same price as this Forester, the deal seemed pretty nice.

I am really excited to get this Forester, I will clean the shit out of it, me and my dad will make it fresh, I'll get a ski rack, and fall into the ranks of the Subaru-loving Skiers of Newschoolers.

just so you know, this is the most bullshit program the government, which tries to be "green", has ever come up with. every car that dealers take for this program has to be destroyed, no matter what condition its in. they drain the oil and run sodium silicate through the engine and transmission to destroy them. Since when has destroying perfectly good used cars to get people to buy shitty overpriced new american cars been acceptable? let gm go bankrupt, and take daimler and ford with it.

MODELS: Cars and trucks must be 1984 models or newer.

MPG: Eligible vehicles must get 18 miles per gallon or less.

PAPERWORK: Owners need to show dealers their vehicle, title, proof of registration and proof of insurance.

CAR REBATES: $3,500 if the new vehicle gets at least 4 mpg more than the trade-in and $4,500 if it gets at least 10 mpg more than the trade-in.

TRUCK REBATES: For SUVs, pickups or minivans, a $3,500 rebate if the new vehicle gets at least 2 mpg higher than the old vehicle or $4,500 if it gets at least 5 mpg higher than the trade-in.

Honestly, 2mpg, 5mpg, 10mpg. That sounds like no progress at all. Europe has had cars with 60-70+ mpg for years now and we're still getting excited over 30mpg.

they are giving people a hell of a lot  more money then they would be getting for their cars. My 1992 beemer is worth, maybe $1000, if i get $3500 for it i will shit bricks.
And its not only american cars that you have to buy, its any car. And they arent that shitty, and how could you say over priced? where do you see cars being sold for less?

Honestly man, I wouldn't worry about getting the Forester.  The top three most reliable car makers are Toyota, Honda, and Subaru, and 100k on those engines is still a young motor that gets pretty good gas mileage for the room you get in that car.  The money you will save over time is going to far outweigh any government rebate, and you can still sell the Caravan and put some dough towards the Forester!

yes its an epic deal for the people that qualify, like (possibly) you. what we're saying is that they should either resell them and turn more of a profit for automakers, or at the least, give them to very poor families in need of a vehicle. either of these would make way more sense than scrapping them

Thanks man, I am looking forward to the Forester, I had my heart set on it until earlier today, but now it is the car for me.

And the snow tires for my van are literally worth more than the van itself, it is funny.

I still can't believe my van is not qualified, who cares, it has 170k on it and I know the engine/trans can go well over 200k if it is driven right.

not at all dude its called capitalist, if a companiy is not financially/socially viable in todays economy why should we save it, let it go bankrupt all this is doing is delaying the enivatiable, and they say they are restructuring it, they started going down hill in the 70's they have had 30 + years to turn ther act around, restructuring will do nothing, when was the last time the government ran anything successfuly...Why should we bail them out for making stupid desicions, if i go and charge 10 g's on my credit card and cart fix it whos gona bail me out...no one ill have to declair bankrupcy...simple economics

you're the idiot, gm is one of the worst companies on earth, and if it weren't for the shit ton of money and subsidies and policies to block foreign car companies a bigger portion of the market, and lets not forget general american stupidity (you), then gm would have gone bankrupt, and probably shut down, many years ago. if they were producing their cars without any help from your (parents(as I doubt you pay taxes)) pocket, they would cost more to produce then what they sell for, a gross loss.

also, your car must be complete shit because my 83 mercedes is still worth 2.5 grand, so a 92 bmw, unless its been trashed completely should be worth at least 4 grand to the right buyer.

its a trickle down theory. If rich people buy, poor people work. poor people work, they make money, they buy too. if rich people aren't buying, and poor people aren't work, the economy is in the shitter, like it is now.

and what do you mean complete shit? go look at the KBB value of a 1992 318i. Even in excellent condition, it doesnt break the $2000 mark. Its not a collectable, no one wants it unless its for parts or a kid needs a cheap car. thats basicallly all its good for. no way its worth $4000

damn I never knew bmws were so damn cheap. I know what I'm buying after my new motorcycle. and trickle down theory is just that, a theory. it has never worked in practice. rich people horde money, they don't let it feed down to the masses. and sorry for any perceived rudeness in my previous post, I just spend 14 hours at work and another 4 chasing down motorcycle parts to prep for sturgis, so I'm damn irritable.

maybe i shouldnt have said theory. It was used in the crash of 1929. Basically rich people bailed, and that killed the economy and factory workers jobs. when they were buying things, the "poorer" factory workers were doing well

its just logic, i guess they havent tested it over and over because they dont have to many economies to screw around with. but yeah, just think about it, it all works out when you understand it

actually the govenrment created pandomonium saying banks were going to close so every one would go withdral their savings once the banks couldnt pay off there loans the "government" bought up all these banks, the federal reserve was created prior to this by the same people who started these rumons, so they could gain controle of the financial system when this pre fabricated colapse would take place

and the rich people didnt bail, the majority of them had money to play with sold stocks short and became more wealth than any of us could ever imagine

It runs like a fucking champ. Just put $1000 into it because my dad believes in running cars into the ground. Brand new radiator, sick sterio. Just don't stall though. For some reason if won't stay started if you stall, you gotta keep the engine revved for a little while or just start moving or else it will just shut off. I mean its not a huge deal and probably has something to do with ignition or idling, but i mean its a little problem
Its got some rust on a panel or two, but nothing huge. It looks sexy though
