BERFORE you read this, please know this is not a rant and i am not a homophobe.

I liv in an  small town of 12,000 maybe. Chicagos gay pride march was just a few week ago (i went downtown to watch it), a few months before that i saw my first openly gay couple in my town (2 men kissing on the side of the road) i didnt really care, i thought it was a little wierd but i kept walking. but after that iver seen more and more men and women interacting in sensual ways that can non-other be described as homo-sexual. Now there is a gay bar on our main street, and i keep on seeing more and more gays everywhere, its not a bad thing, just different. the thing i dont get is i live in a biggeted town of people who jack off to notredame foot ball games, so why here? is this happening anywhere else?

I live in the land of Prop8... i never saw so many gaybashers in my life until the 3 days leading up to the election... theres no way they were from the town i live in (which is right next to berkeley, so... yeah..) and they might not even be from this state.. it was WEIRD.

No, you 100% missed the point.  Separation of church and state.  Gays want to be recognized as married by the state, nothing to do with the church.  Not all marriage has to do with the church. 

Kepler (I think), those are really good points, I would much rather help Mexico than the Middle East.

ok i saw that movie and if you even knew anyone who was gay you would see how your statement is flawed.

first off bruno was far exaggerated of how gay people behave. A gay person trying to get with a straight guy is no different than one of us straight guys going for a girl that we knew was a lesbian. its just shit that doesn't happen often. i honestly hate this prejudice and its something that needs to stop all the gay people that i know are nothing like Bruno they are similar to us just have a different sexual preference and sometimes they are flaming but not to the extent of Bruno.

What was scary was the MANPOWER that was put into it... there were definitely more mormons around where i live than there ever have been in my life... and I grew up in this area, so i must say it was weird how large the influx of mormons were to the area... a lot of them came into the store I work at and acted very strange (they made it pretty obvious who they were, by basically trying to convert us while were trying to help actual customers [bullshit]... and then telling us how much 'better' the snow is in utah than in tahoe [double bullshit]... both of which made my blood sorta boil - dont diss where people ski if you're trying to convert them)

anyways, it was crazy how much was put together by churches for that cause... and you know, when the catholics actually join forces with the mormons, something is DEFINITELY amiss...

and it still only passed 52%-48%... and its going back up on the ballot either this next november, or at least within 2 years... yay california, where referendum is the only way shit gets done, because of the ineptities of the state government to take control for once...

im so suprised there is still so much hate towards gays, gay hate isnt even up to junior high standards in terms of maturity, its straight up grade school.

i just think its so pathetic that people can let what other people do get to them that much. people need to stop being so fucking stuck up. 

sure i think a guy sucking a dick is gross as hell, but i also think its gross when i see some overweight tatoo'd meth head skank making out with her white trash boyfriend. but you know what? i keep to myself and say "fuck it" its not my business what other people stick in their ass, and neither should it be yours, and it certainly doesnt effect how i think of someone as a person. 

 actually i think i like gay people more, as they tend to be alot more positive and arent stuck up ass holes about everything. they just prance around smiling not giving a shit.

i don't  really have time to chime in on this discussion with a good post, but i think it's so stupid to judge people that much just because they are atracted to the same gender.  how is a guy kissing a guy in public, any different from a guy kissing a girl?  sure it may be strange, because you don't see it very often, but so what.  people should be able to do whatever they want in their life, and make their own choices.  as long as it doesn't cause harm.  i really dont see how a guy kissing a guy should have any impact on your life.  this really isn't directed towards the OP, but more towards some of the posters in this thread.

oh yeah, and in western mass, there really isn't a strong presence of the gay community.  most likely being that there's not many large citiess, and not much to do for younger people, so it's not really an attractive place for 20 or so y.o.'s to move to.  i think out towards boston, which is the case in most large cities, there's definitely a much larger presence for gays.   i think areas where there might have been gays before, but are very populated by them, as people are learning to accept it more and more gays are just becoming much more open.  a classic example in the OP, of what i'm talking about.

im preceived not to be open minded, and homophobic becasue if i had a family and children i wouldnt want them seeing to men in underwear making out and dancing with eachother in the street at a parade, i woulndt want my family or kids if i had to see to women doing the same thing, or a straight couple acting like that, its not whos doing the act, it is that the act is inapprpriate,  you my friend are a fucking retard for writing a response like that...it makes me a homophobe becasue i dont want to see two men showing pda, i would rather not see pda period, and to someone else, i was raised roman catholic and i believe that marage should be sactioned by the church, getting married in a church to me means more that getting  married on the vegas strip , and im sure many people would aggree with me, so to whoever wrote i "missed the point" i dont think i did, i just approached the supject from a different angle, and if  i am ignorant becasue i believe marage should be a religious "event"...wow im pretty ignorant i guess!

To be fair if that were true, civil unions that were functionally identical to marriage in law would be acceptable to everyone. In reality there is a social aspect to the debate, to which your analogy to "separate but equal" was intended to speak. And I agree with that analogy.

Yeah, I have quite a few gay friends. Nothing wrong with gay people in general. I'd bet a steady 10% of the population has always been gay, but recently its more acceptable to be open about it, so it seems there are more gay people

Also not really true, you can be married in fact, usually if you've lived together for a few years. So, lesson of the day: charge your girlfriend rent, kids.

I agree with your position anyway. For all I care, Churches can denounce whatever they like and I in turn can denounce Churches for doing so. I have a problem, however, with anyone who proposes basing the law on what the Church denounces.

So I was just in Boulder Colorado and I went to The Cheesecake Factory on Pearl St. and got cheesecake of course but anyways my point of saying this was the fact that a GAY guy served it to me and whenever I said thank you he said "ohhh it's my pleasure" like I was hitting on him or something. hahaha but yeah gays are encroaching. I am opposed to same sex marriage.
It really bothers me when people say "well, it doesn't affect me, so I don't care if it's legal or not." You are a part of a society. A group of people. It's selfish of you to think only of yourself and how a particular issue would affect only you. When dealing with issues such as gay marriage, it is imperative to think of how it would affect the nation as well.
I think that same sex marriage would negatively affect society. I think that it would degrade the quality of families. You see, men and women are very different. In a family, they bring different qualities to the household. Men bring things like security and drive. Women bring things like nurture and stability. I really do believe that children need both a male and a female parent. I can see through my friends how divorce has affected them badly. Not having a dad or not having a mom has been devastating in these households.
Now, that's not to say that my way is the only way to run a family. I'm sure many same sex couples could provide all that is needed. But all of them would not. Their children would grow up having many of the same problems that affect kids with divorced parents. These problems would work their way up in society, eventually causing bigger problems.
Call me bigoted, homophobic, redneck, or discriminatory. But that's my opinion and I'm sticking by it.

That is a fucking retarded thing to say. Especially in a society where we have just reached the 50% mark for divorces, are allowed 52 hour marriages a la Hollywood, and so much more. Gay couples have been shown to be, on average, 52% longer lasting (73% among lesbians), and have less problems with their kids. To say that we would fuck up society is being incredibly ignorant, insensitive, and competely missing the point of marriage. Also, if you go by your logic, you should criminalize single parents and old couples.

So we're not supposed to get married cuz you can't deal with it, and will go into an apocalyptic frenzy? We're not allowed to marry because you can't handle it? WTF man. That's the most selfish thing I've ever heard.

The only thing that will happen if gays get married is that gays will get married.

but gay marriage won't affect anyone else but the gay community(in a positive way, I assume). The only people who are all hot and bothered about this are the ones who LET the idea of homosexuality bother them. So in this instance, "It doesn't affect me" but I want it legal, because I have compassion and I believe that gays/lesbos are good people that deserve the same rights as straight people.

dads and moms by no means follow the same rules in every family across the board. there are families where mothers are the breadwinners and fathers are at home taking care of the kids. or vice versa, or any combination of the above. but when the divorce rate is over 50% with only straight couples getting married, to imply that gays couldnt provide just as good, or shitty of a household is ignorant.


btw when i discuss this, am i the only one that thinks of the south park episode where they have to take care of the egg?
