I heard it was going to be a pretty basic os.  Unlike OSX and Win.  It would be good for computers at work and stuff that don't need too many programs and just need SPEED!

I might have to check this out next year!

It's not really competing with it.

It is giving a quality, quick-boothing, web-oriented, lightweight operating system.  It sounds like it is going to be very good at what it is designed to do, which keeps users seconds away from the internet.

My motherboard has something similar, ASUS expressgate.  If I have it enabled, I can take my computer from completely dead, and onto Newschoolers in 3 seconds.  The problem with it is that it is pretty featureless, and it is more of just a neat thing to try out.  I believe that Google will have something that's just as quick, but have the shine and ease-of use that Google is known for.

It seems like it is less in depth as windows.  They said it was more intended for netbooks and not high processing computers or regular desktops.  Also it is supposed to be pretty web based, with goes with surprise considering it Is google

its a really good idea. if it's like any of their other existing products they'll do a good job of it and it'll be top of it's class for what it is intended for. really, most computer users don't need anything more than what I listed above. they want to be able to check their email (with gmail you can fetch mail from other accounts and send mail from those accounts through gmail). they want to be able to save and look at photos, which picasa does well. they want to be able to go online and they want to be able to do all of this easily and quickly. I think they'll be onto a winner

If you read the articles, it is going to be rolled out for netbooks, but the longterm plan is to roll it out on full laptops and desktops to give Microsoft a run for its money.

I'd give it a try for no cost, but I am pretty satisfied with Ubuntu for basic pc use. Can't see paying for an OS unless the thing is totally tits.

As soon as i read this, it being integrated with web based programs is what i thought of. The post a few posts up sounds right. It would boot up fast, and all your programs would be accessed via the interwebs. Sounds like a good idea, sort of.

They are also planning on bringing android to desktop computers in the future. Android will be more of an actual os that you can run programs on your computer with. Where this OS is just going to be able to get you on the web so you can do everything there.

google knows their shit, I expect it to be very good for netbooks. If it is really fast it might be worth dual booting for when you just want to surf the net and do simple stuff. I think its going to be sick

but this should be really good for linux, because more manufactures will hopefully start writing more and better drivers, soo hopefully linux overall will get that much better.

I think this could help Linux in the sense that it has the potential to open the general computer user to realizing there are options other than Windows or OSX out there for operating systems.

For the vast majority, a basic OS like Linux offers with Ubuntu is more than enough.
