D40 v.s d60 sory for another thread

so ive been getting a lot more into photography lately and im thinking about getting a d40 or d60 and just wanted to get some people oppion, should i get a d40 and throw a nice lens on it or get the d60 and use it straight out of the box, the thing im nervious about the d40 is ive herd a ton of lenses wont match up becasue of some of the settings just looking for some advice

Only difference between the 40 and 60 is the 40 has 6mp and iso 1600, and the 60 has 10mp and iso 3200.
Go for the d40 body only, and get a better lens.

i was leaning that way anyways, i dont need an iso that hits 3200, ive seen quite a few shots done in the 40 and was curious how much of a noticable difference in there in quality of the pictures when moving up to the d60

unless you are going to print large photos (10x17 or so) you won't really notice a difference in quality between 6 and 10MP and I never shoot ISO 3200 because it has way to much noise on the D60.

What I would do is scrap both of them since they basically are the same camera and go get a used D80 with some decent glass instead.

if you look at where cameras are today, megapixels are an irrelevant arguement because more than 6mp and you can print posters and i dont think anyone is making a dSLR under 6mp anymore.

As for the d40 vs d60, I would suggest skipping both. While great cameras they lack the internal AF moter which makes a fair number of lenses manual focus only when using that body. For less money find a d70 or d70s which is a bit older but is a very solid choice for learning photography and will work with more lenses. Then buy yourself a 50mm f/1.8 to go along with the kit 18-70 and you will have a solid package for learning the basics

i agree with this guy.

there is also pretty much no difference in photo quality between the d40 and d60 that you will notice. like they said, it adds megapixels (which are very unnecessary), a higher iso (which creates too much noise), and this feature called active d-lighting (which makes the camera take twice as long to process pics and is kinda pointless). And neither one has an internal autofocus motor. if your sticking with one of those, get the d40 and get yourself some nice glass. I've heard great things about the new 35mm f/1.8 AF-S lens for those cameras, so that could be a good choice for a "normal" lens. but i like the d70 idea

The lens thing you were talking about is true for both cameras. Neither has its own built in auto focus motor, which means that you can only buy lenses with an auto focus motor. Those will have AF somewhere in there name
