Popping

just outta curiosity. is it bad to pop to much..feels like i pop to hard. but then again when i dont i sumtimes i clip an edge. and when i pop i cant really land anything more that a 3 but when i dont i look sloppy. suggestions??

Weel you can catch an edge while going switch, so you want to pop then, but popping isnt bad but dont focus to much on popping as hard as you can, focus on the trick

it was a cool story....whatever, he prolly popped off a jump with no landing.

popping off a jump changes everything, especially while spinning. you need to learn a comfortable amount of pop, you want to  do the same amount so no matter what size jump it is, you stay consistant. once you can take off clean, you can slow down your takeoff speed and carry the same distance. now you should be able to set your spin nice and steezy, but take your time and re-learn the 3, open your eyes and enjoy spotting your landing. if you get to that point, drop in hot, set for your 3, pop, spot your lander early and let the 5 come around.

99% of your trick is your takeoff, and a solid 50% off that is your pop. Get a nice big pop in, it will get you stable and level in the air and make your tricks easier. If I'm having a bad day I go back to my pop and make sure I pop absolutely huge on all my stuff. Also make sure you're popping evenly off both feet.

You definetly wanna pop as much as you can. you might be popping the wrong way for the trick and just letting it all go. you gotta use your core as much as you can with your pop. pop is the most important part of doing any trick.

always pop but dont overdo it especially on backflips anyone else see kids not pop and do the worst looking backflips or even hit the back of their heads on the lip?

Looks like everyone does it different.  You just have to feel out what works for you.  It also makes a diffence in what you're throwing.   For instance if you pop too hard throwing a back you can completely kill your rotation which sucks.  If you try to butter it too much, you can pinwheel and one and a half.  Also if your skis have a really soft tail and you pop hard you can get thrown completely off.  I'd say just do a few straight airs and mess with it until you get a pop that feels right; then start tricking again and try to get the same pop dialed.  No worries, that's something that usually kind of fixes itself anyways.

popping is pretty important, helps you set more of a controlled spin, so important for switch spins ( I totally learned that the hard way), definitely something you gotta learn through feel though, how much you need. It's also useful for when you get good at judging your speed coming up to the jump, if you're coming in slower, popping harder to clear the knuckle or whatnot. As for carving off jumps to set your spin, I suggest you learn to pop first.
