Going to the gym

Is anyone else gonna hit the gym to get stronger for skiing this summer.  I am a light weight and think getting a bit stronger would help my skiing and help prevent injuries.  I went to the store with a friend of mine today thats big on weight lifing and got some protein and a calcium supplement because I an just getting over a broken bone.  Who else is gonna be working out this summer in hopes that it will help your skiing?

def helps ur skiing overall and iv noticed that it helps with falls getting less hurt on big falls and stuff and overall its just good for you

totally. Dont forget that if you eat shit often, then a good workout and toned muscles are the difference between a painful knee and a full ACL tear, etc

Definitely good to work on your core muscles like your back.

Deadlifts
Squats
Stamina Exercises - e.g. balancing, using medicine balls, swiss balls - all help with your core muscles.

Then of course which ever other muscle groups you need to work on.

It will make you a better skier, youll have a healthier body, less prone to injury, and look good for a babes during summer.

yep it helps. going to the gym + stretching before skiing makes injuries much harder to get. it also helps you pop off jumps, spin on rails because you have more muscle in your legs

i play football so the lifting is definetly a part of my life. i noticed tht this year im way less sore after skiign and u can bounce back from falls easier.plus noone fucks with you on the mountain

i dont have to work this summer so once summer skiing is over it's bike bike bike and more biking everyday

Hmm i don't know..

Swimming is better for you overall, but results are way more visible with lifting

And with lifting you can pinpoint the particular muscles you want to work on, unlike swimming.

I think they can both be used in conjunction with each other

I've done swimming before and it is great for you but gets really boring after a while. I switch it up all the time with swimming,lifting,running, being lazy as fuck. but I worked out a bunch over the summer and it helps an incredibly amount. its not just lifting, but also being in good physical shape, ex-endurance, being able to run a couple miles w/out breaks

I plan to run about 25 miles a week this summer just to stay in decent shape.  I used to run cross country so during the summer I run like 100 miles a week.  Endurance is not really where I need to focus

I'm getting a bosu ball for my birthday and am super stoked. I use one at physio right now and it's great for balance and you can do much more with it too. My favourite right now is balancing, ball side down and throwing a weighted ball against a wall and catching it - works all kinds of muscles.

hmm not really going to the gym. but have been going running heaps to help general fitness and leg strength. ive still got 8 weeks to go before our NZ winter so it should make a difference.

i feel ya man, i tore my mcl so i will be doing a ton of biking and a bunch of lifting once im up to it.
i was so stoked to hear that i didnt need surgery after i had my mri today that i went longboarding all evening. probably not the best but it feels alright.

so much fun. Like really, so much fun. I beg to do bosu rather than wobble. I do a lot of physio to get all in shape for surgery time and bosu is by far my favourite because you've got the board on top, ball down below for balance squats, or maybe one legged (super effing hard, by the way) my goal is to be able to throw&catch a ball while balancing one legged on the bosu, right now I do two but with a weighted ball. But you can also flip it around and do lunges  with one foot up on the ball part. I'm excited already. Not to mention the amazing amount of crunches and other upper body exercies allowed.

The gym is great in the summer for skiing. Being stronger is also better for being durable. BUT, being able to squat 500 pounds won't magically make you a better skier. Like silence said, medicine balls and balance boards will help the most. 

Personally, I found a mix of weights(upper body) and cycling to be the best. I don't know how old you are or even if you have a bike, but start riding! It mixes it up and if you start using the big chain rings it builds your legs stamina/endurance/strength. I can't squat 500 pounds but I can squat 135 WAY more than my friends in d1 sports. Just work on your weaknesses and it'll all be good!

My schedule works perfectly, during the winters I freestyle ski as much as 4 days a week and during the summer I play college football. I have taken some of the hardest falls of my group of riders at my mountain this season, with all to show being some cuts and bruises. I came off a handrail wrong at one point and what should of been a torn MCL was only a take it easy for the day ride away because of the lifting I have done. It definitely makes a improvement of the durability of the human body. However not too good to get too big, couple guys on my team cant touch their shoulders because their biceps are so big....haha its stuuupid.

squats, front squats, leg curls, leg extensions, lunges, wall sits, standing sits, lat pull downs, ski squats, calf raises, im not sure what there called but they work the front of the shin and are oppisite of of claf raises (super good for getting rid of shin bang)

and also stretching

Wall Shin Raises

Simply stand with your back to a wall, with your heels about the length of your feet away from the wall. Then, lean back until your buttocks and shoulders rest against the wall. Dorsiflex both ankles simultaneously, while your heels remain in contact with the ground. Bring your toes as far toward your shins as you can, and then lower your feet back toward the ground, but do not allow your forefeet to contact the ground before beginning the next repeat. Simply lower them until they are close to the ground, and then begin another repetition. Complete about 12 to 15 reps.

Once you have finished the reps, maintain your basic position with your back against the wall, dorsiflex your ankles to close to their fullest extent, and then quickly dorsiflex and plantar flex your ankles 15 times over a very small range of motion (smaller than the nearly full range you use for the basic reps; the emphasis here is on quickness). These short, quick ankle movements are called pulses.

As you gain strength over time, make the wall shin raises progressively more difficult by advancing from one set of 15 reps to two and then three sets of 15 (for the basic raises and the pulses). It's OK to walk around for 15 to 30 seconds between sets.

If you want to gain some leg muscle to help you skiing focus on squats and deadlifts. They both work almost the all the muscles in your lower body and legs. Plus the incorporation of so many muscles means that your body will release more testosterone making your other workouts more effective. Coupling those with stamina exercises and core strenthening will make you an all around better skier.

if the kid doesn't have much lifting experience he shouldn't jump right into weighted squats and deadlifts.
