I got involved by spinning around three times on a tree stump overgrown with moss and saying 'herkle derkle.'

i was first a ski instructor, and now i work at my second ski shop, and this winter i'm helping head and atomic on their demo days. Out of all the different jobs you can get, working in a ski shop is the best.

Make your presence known, get all the knowledge you can about all aspects of skiing, not just jibbing, including the business of skiing. Look at what is on the mountain besides your friends. That is a good start for a shop job, technical knowledge helps, but you can be trained...

Reps really like when you understand the business. There's a reason they give you their companies gear and want you to be seen with it on ... and it's not just cuz of you steeze cool guy :) haha just kidding. It's a business, all about marketting. Work in a ski shop, meet the reps. I created my own newschool program at ym club ... that's exposure, there's an oportunity for people to see me with their companies equip. I mean, ya need skills, but you have to be an on-the-hill salesman/manequin.

The one thing people dont relize is that being in the ski business is not all its cracked up to be. First off, say you work in a shop, you gotta work when the lifts are turning. So if your workin a 40+ hour week, your forfeting 5 days of skiing. And the thing that blows the most is your so involved, and you just wanna go out and ski. To become a true ski bum, get a job on a cleaning crew at your local hill, they usally work 4-11pm, which means you can ski all day, go to work, then sleep. The perfect combo.
Yea, we get discounts on gear, but practically everyone can get these discounts if they try hard enough. And yea its fun to work in a shop, selling skis and tuneing for a living, but just dont expect to get 7 days a week on snow, or that big powder day when all of your buds are out, and you gotta man the shop.

Get a job as ski patroller. Yeah we have to do some shitty work from time to time, but it is by far the best job on the mountain.
We get paid to ski, get first tracks on everything and line ups are for suckers and ski instructors.
Haha, Instructors blow... that's the worst job on the mountain. You're a fucking underpaid babysitter.

If you want to work in the industry, all the posts above offer some great advice. If you just want to be a ski bum, get a job at a restruant (in a ski town) in the evenings...you get to ski all day, and work in the evenings. Good times!
