Football rules questions

i am from europe, so football isnt encoded in my DNA, but recently i got into it. thus i have a few specific rule questions so, actually its hard to find these things, so i just ask you (i discoverd quite a lot football fans here, so i think it should be working)

what happens, if (according to nfl-rules)

1) a field goal is just short and ball stays on the field (without being blocked)?

2) a field goal is blocked and the ball is just laying there, when will it been blown dead?

3) if a defender intercepts a pass in the endzone, is running out of it and is forced back in. is this a safety?

4) who in hell is allowed to pass? in some general rules book i found something like "only the qb is allowed to throw a ball forward" but with all that wildcat, HB pass plays and stuff, this doesnt seem working.

5) who is allowed to rush/receive either?

6) there is some kind of a specialty rule, that a receiver needs to get both feet down before hitting the ground when the defender tackled him before he had control or something?

so that was it pretty much, thx a lot

1. someone is allowed to field it and run it back see hester with the bears last year.  this is like a punt kindof.

2. someone is allowed to recover it for yards when it is blocked actual specifics idk

3.  if he crosses the goalline into like the field then pushed backinto the endzone its a safety.

4.anyone with an eligable number can throw it.  it just cant be passed forward then thrown forward, like a halfback pitch pass.

5. anyone without a line number

6. i dont think so the reciver has to have full possesion of it

absolutely anyone can pass the ball if the play is complicated enough and it calls for someone other than the QB to pass, but they have to receive it initially either from the center or by way of a lateral (back pass)...also they cannot throw it once they've passed the line of scrimmage

good luck understanding football without having grown up in the states, that seems like it would be impossible...there are still some rules i dont understand and i played the fucking game for 5 years in school

its not that hard (for general use). i sure wont be able to coach a team, but i know easily enough to follow a game.

i saw that press conference on nfl.com...

actually, that was hilarious. a guy that gets millions of dollar should know whats happening.

but to stand infront of the public and say: "honestly, i didnt know it" IS A VERY TOUGH MOVE that people should respect.

I grew up in football country. not a single person i talked to about that game knew of that rule. i know someone who plays for tha bears and he admitted he didn't know.

i thought i would clarify a couple of these.

1. you can field it as long as it does not land in the endzone.

5. anyone with with an eligible number that is not "covered up" which means you can only have one receiver on the line of scrimmage on each side of the ball. if you watch the nfl you will see that either there is a tight end with a receiver backed up a yard from the line of scrimmage or two recievers, one on the line and one off

The only reason I knew that teams could tie is because the steelers tied the bengals a few years ago.

Also, with regard to question about a defender intercepting the ball in the end zone...if he is pushed back into the end zone wouldn't forward progress spot the ball outside the end zone...but if he ran back into the end zone on his own and is tackled then its a safety. I may be wrong though.

ah yeah, thats a good one. you often see a running back running for yards and then a defender pushes him back. then the ball spot seems to be a kind of an average between the point he reached by himself and the actual spot where he went down (cuz normally i thought that the ball spot is the one he reached).

forward progress is a really touchy issue these days because of Backs like Brandon Jacobs. They wait til forever to blow tha whistle because he could seriously break a tackle or truck stick someone at any moment. They don't want it to result in like an whistle and then have it be like soccer where there is an advantage call if they get trippedd up but still make the breakaway. They usually spot it as an average unless it's for a 1st down or TD, in that case it is almost always tha farthest movement forward.

6. Receivers don't have to have both feet down if  they are pushed out of bounds in mid air by a defender.

they actually changed the push out rule this year, defenders can maul the receiver once they try to catch it, regardless of if their contact pushes the receiver out of bounds... it isn't a judgment call anymore.

well the BASIC rules are easy, and like nothing super complicated ever really gets applied in high school ball...

but once you start watching a lot of college and pro football, with their replays and the high stakes involved, the complication of the rules system increases exponentially. i probably learn 2-3 new rules EVERY SEASON just because ill be watching a game and some weird play or weird penalty will get called into question. like, did you know it's illegal to wave for a fair catch on a punt with 2 hands??? you have to use just one...it's a 5 yard penalty otherwise. and there's apparently a penalty for linemen merely called giving someone "the business." that was called in a game in the last year or so...its definition is seemingly open for interpretation. plus there are like 30 different forms of pass interference, some of which border so closely on non-calls that their definition is practically arbitrary.

at the highest levels i swear it might be the most complicated sport in the world...aside from maybe golf...or Calvin Ball
