i'm sure there ae those who fake stuff similar to this, but guys seriously, don't not believe someone's mental dysfunction because you don't understand it. There are so many people out there that have mood disorders, eating disorders and soforth wich most are not faking it. If you get in the habbit of dismissing people's disfunctions as if it is something they controll, you're propogating a terable community for the mentally ill.

think about it, it'd be the same as telling a cancer patient to walk it off, and stop being a pansy.  1 in 4 americans will have a mental disorder in their life, hopefully you don't blow your best friend off when they  drop into an episode of depression because you think they're faking it.

oh i know depression, ive dealt with it enough to understand mental disorders. but that is a legitimate problem with your mental functioning. just like an eating disorder.

living in middle of fuckin nowhere U.S.A. and talking normally for 40 years and then speaking in an unidentifiable accent? no way. she may speak differently but i would call it an accent. if you can't place it either then what the fuck? does she have multiple random accent disorders then? she said she spoke swedish, french, german and russian and had no idea what she was saying. that is where i see her legitamacy failing. the odds in that happening, on multiple occasions, are astounding. if its even possible. what proof does she have? i can pull off a wicked South African accent because my parents have it and ive been around my family my whole life but that doesnt mean i dont normally talk like your average american.

Foreign accent syndrome (FAS) is a rare speech disorder characterized by the appearance of a new accent, different from the speaker's native language and perceived as foreign by the speaker and the listener. In most of the reported cases, FAS follows stroke but has also been found following traumatic brain injury, cerebral haemorrhage and multiple sclerosis. In very few cases, FAS was reported in patients presenting with psychiatric disorders but the link between this condition and FAS was confirmed in only one case.

Previous exposure to the new accent is not necessary for its emergence. Different explanations of the functional origin of FAS have been suggested, one of the more frequent being impaired access to verbal-motor patterns or a mild form of apraxia of speech.

no bro i did my research. re-read my post. i said that she loses all legitimacy in my eyes when she says she has communicated with other people in 4 different languages and they have understood here perfectly and she has had no idea what she is saying. that makes me think this is bullshit.

also i said it isnt really a foreign accent. i think her head trauma has just affected her speech area of her brain therefore causing her to speak differently. it is DIFFERENT not a foreign accent.

but i have my opinion, you have yours. i respect that.

i spoke in a new zealand accent for about three fourths of this summer as a sort of ongoing joke. then i realized i was thinking in the accent and it was somewhat difficult to speak how i used to and got really scared and stopped doing it.


she had a tiny tiny tiny bit of credibility before she said she spoke all those different languages to people and didn't know what they were saying. what a dumb attention whore.

OMG she's talking in tongues on occasion.... somehow this is bullshit despite it being associated with some disorder that has to do with speech... i don't want to go out on a limb but my guess is that there is some correlation going on.

And i'm sorry i can't help but think of the fundi-Christians when i see you post, so i'm going to point out that regardless of your beliefs, there are plenty of Americans who'd testify to speaking in tongues in church. This is just to provide evidence that  it's not something unfathomable, and rather quite accepted as possible. It shouldn't matter whether it happens in church or due to a mental disorder such as FAS, it's not something you just jump bullshit on.

But really, how are you guys arguing with me? the point is OK maybe she is faking it, but the chance is she probably isn't, and even if she is, there are plenty of disorders out there that make no sense to the average individual. Look up conversion disorder -- people going blind after severe stress events despite no physiological evidence of dysfunction.   You'll see someone who reports they are blind, yet they are able to avoid obstacles in their path as if they could see. I'm sure you lot would be happy to say BULLSHIT THEY'RE FAKING IT  (read obnoxious whiny voice) the truth of the matter is that they are not.

Those suffering from psychological disorders have notoriously been neglected by the hegemony of society simply due to the ignorance involved. Don't be part of the majority here, figure out a way for you to empathize with someone who's dealing with a disorder regardless of your skepticism. In doing so you'll make the community a better place, and help those who are suffering.

There is a big difference between an accent and a whole different language. There is NO WAY you could start speaking french without any prior knowledge. You could start talking in a french accent, but not actually french. She loses all credibility when she claims that she can speak other languages and have no idea what she is saying but other people understand her perfectly. That's not a mental disorder, that's bullshit.

You realize there is a HUGE difference between speaking in "Tongues" and speaking in French or Swedish or whatever language they were saying? You can comprehend that can't you? There is a difference between an ACTUAL LANGUAGE THAT PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND THAT YOU'VE NEVER LEARNED BEFORE and speaking in the gibberish that is "Tongues". And yes, the capslock was necessary.

The amount of denial or support for the issue has nothing to do with it. That is just a technicality and for a real debate to occur in any form more sources would be needed on the subject. I wasn't denying the FAS. I can believe that and I fully understand the how complex mental illnesses can be. What I found ridiculous is articles that say she spoke other languages that people could coherently understand. That is frankly not possible unless she already knew how to speak the language and had forgotten or was no longer fluent. Speaking in tongues aka gibberish is also understandable, as is speaking in a foreign accent. I realize that it is not made up, and in many cases people brush over mental illnesses and feel that the patient is just being over-imaginative. My denial had nothing to do with the actual disorder but everything to do with the claims from the family and from journalists.

Good god, thanks for such a digression from my main point. So many people here are just not grasping the reality of mental disorders which is unfortunate because of the severity and prevalence of mental disorders in this country.

I'm no scientist on brains but here's what I think. The brain is an extraordinary piece of humans and there's still so much we don't know about it (and the human body for that matter). That being said there's been a very small amount of cases so making any definitive judgment on what is right/wrong is useless and baseless.

The accent is very believable as it is simply a change in the pronunciation of words which in turns changes the tone of your voice. It's so simple when you think about it, when you drop or mispronounce R you come off as having a Boston/New York accent. It's not that these people are just picking a language and copying it! Simple slurs, mispronunciations, and speech speed can alter the english (or any other) language to sound like any number of foreign accents.

so at first i thought it was just going to be a spoof one fetal alcohol syndrome which now kinda sounds like a bad joke but after watching the video it kinda reminds me of the movie the island where ewan mcgregor dreams and there is latin in his dream and then he gets it on with scarlett johansen. i think im going to go watch the island now.
