Question about the bible

I was reading another thread about prop 8 and how people oppose it because the bible says its bad. Before i ask this, i am not making an attack im just asking a question that i was confused about. If you want to pass a law banning gay marage because the bible says so, why don't you want to pass a law banning premarital sex?

well banning premarital sex would be incredibly hard to enforce for one thing.

I think a better question would be why are forms of birth control legal? because they are also considered a sin in the bible.

that is kind of ridiculous.  if you can't tell me where it is found then you should stop stating it.
about homosexuality.
the bible states multiple times that marriage is between one man and one woman.
it also says that homosexuality is a detestable sin, and to "flee from sexual immorality"
that pretty says it all.  you are supposed to "flee" from it.  voting for it is kind of the opposite.

About the second reference.  Jesus also said to "hate the sin, not the sinner"
and if half of the two face hypocritical "Christians" (which LITERALLY means "little christ") understood that verse, then they wouldn't be the most hated "religion" on earth...
if you want to to give the reference for the ideas stated above then i will try to find them....

if a law is made because of the bible that is negecting the wishes and rights of people who worship other religons.  it is biased and wrong.

You wouldnt tell a jew to worship jesus (if you would, you need help), so why tell a gay to follow your rules. My view on gays is if you are against homosexuality, id stick with women.

Thats true, but when the majority of the country are christan, and about half that like the super orthadox ones, much of our government will be based on their beleifs, which are basicly the bible. Im not sayin i aggree with it, thats just how it is

obviously rules against modern birth control can't be found in the bible because birth control wasn't invented yet. What I should have said was christians have interprited passages in a way that says birth control is immoral. Something along the lines of it impedes upon the creation of life, which, according to christians, is what sex is supposed to be for.


Personally i'm not religious and I think thats complete bullshit, but thats how some people see it i guess

good point. i see what you mean. but you have to consider the other half of the population. if we have a government based on christian beliefs, what does that do to the jews, muslims, etc. ? they might feel threatened or seperated. it ends up hurting unity.

mmmm. risky risky. Religion causes so many problems these days, in fact i'd venture to say that 90% or the issues today are backed by religious beliefs. That shit's wack. Honestly I have no problem what orthodox peeps or religious people do/worship etc... but I have a major problem when they try to impose on people who don't follow their beliefs. I mean come on. About 30 miles south of me in Colorado Springs, that place is insane, focus on the family and people like that. They protest at funerals, they burn flags, have protests filled with hate. I am sure if there is a god, that's not what he would want his little kids going about doing. So that ventures into the laws of today: if its so important for you to not have gay marriages, don't' get one. I'd bet 100 dollars that a majority of the gay people are better members of society than those orthodox crazy people. As for the rest of religious laws, stem cell etc... if you don't want to believe in it or support it, don't contribute funding, don't participate in studies. But above all, leave the peeps who don't believe in religion alone. Its messed up. I am not bashing on Christianity or any other religion, but I sure as hell am bashing on those who get so caught up in it that it brainwashes them into thinking its their way or hell.

I swear, so help me if I ever see those people protesting a soldiers funeral, or bashing gay people violently or any other race. People have no right to impose their beliefs on someone else forcefully.

People these days make me sick.

there's technically no seperation of church and state in state constitutions and supreme court precedence doesnt uphold the 14th amendment to all things in the bill of rights for states yet.
We have some incorporation such as privacy for roe v. wade, double jeapordy for palko v connecticut, free speech cases obviously, but per state constitutions, it is a local vote.

if the majority of the people in a constituency don't want something, then they shouldnt have to.

think about it, by the same logic thats the only reason im gonna have to pay ridic capital gains and income tax when i get out of college.

i don't want income redistribution, it sounds illegal (its a violation of the 14th amendment; equal protection, as well as a violation of our basic foundation of no taxation without representation- if i get taxed more shouldnt i deserve more representation?) but i deal with it because the majority of people have voted it into law.

when social paradigm shifts enough for the majority of a certain district to tolerate same sex marriage, then they can grant the state that power.

afterall, the power to marry is a power vested in the state and all laws should be voted on in this country right? If the vote says no, then the law should be no.

aren't they already allowed to?  I'm not sure.  I think it wouldn't be fair to the child, but at the same time, they may be able to give a kid a better life?   That's a tough one.

it doesnt matter if you believe there should be a seperation of church and state or if its in the bill of rights in the 1st ammendment because it doesnt matter. The bill of rights doesn't directly apply to state governments (barron v. baltimore) and the post brown v board civil rights incorporation has only incorporated things like due process, miranda rights, right to counsel, free speech, no double jeopardy, some instances of eminent domain.

but marriage is not under the application of the bill of rights or any federal laws. it is a state power. We have granted the power to marry to the institution of the state. You have to have some form of government to regulate marriage as it affects housing, economics, tax benefits, as well as a major social regulatory power (the same as child abuse, sex predators, hand guns in school zones) and as the constitution states, every state must be republican or hold votes for certain laws.

since we are fundamentally a democracy, and the power to marry is a state power, then the vote should be the definitive factor in deciding local policy. If the majority of the constituents within a district dont want to live in a gay neighborhood, then they shouldn't have to.

Eventually most states will tolerate them, thats just simple social paradigm. But for now if people want to uphold the family and their term of marriage, then they should be able to and the government shouldnt infringe on their rights either, especially since they are afterall the majority.

I know it sounds like tyrranny of the majority but so is a near 60 seat majority in the senate, 3 justice appointments, and a radically leftist president.

I'm not necessarily in favor of prop 8 passing in california, since i'm usually more of a free-choice type person (which is why I tend to align a bit more conservative in some regards nowadays, but that's beside the point) but some of this shit is stupid.
I think some of you are focusing too hard on the Christian side of the ideology behind this whole anti-gay marriage business, since it seems that most societies and religions the world over have had an intolerance on something like gay marriage. Not necessarily gay acts universally, but marriage itself. While that may or may not be what is good for society, I think it is pretty ridiculous that some of you are lashing out at one religious group (which does, indeed, make up a large portion of the population) in this current battle of ideology.

i think we've come a long way to have laws in the western world that arent connected with anything a religion is stating.

i think that all those hardcore christians should try to live their religion the right way and not force anyone to live like they do or to pass laws which are forcing other people to act like they are.

I have no problem with religons being against gay marage
I have no problem with gay marage being voted on, we live in a democracy(sorta)

What i dont like is people infringing on the rights of others when it has no affect on them. Many of the people who vote against gay marage have no contact with gays, and gay marage being legalized would not change their life at all (asside making them mad). Why not let more people in this country be happy?
