References on Resumes

this shit has been bugging me for a long time and never really gotten a straight answer.  maybe I should have listened in careers class........

anyways when you put someone as a reference, should you tell that person you did so?  ive always just put their names and shit on my reference and I know its against the law for an employer to give a bad reference, but like maybe they dont want to be called or something?  i dunno ns hit me up with answers.

nah you never tell someone that you put them on your resume as a reference, you ask them if its ok. also alot of times people wont put their references on the resume. instead it will read "references available upon request" or something like that and if they want them right then and there, whip out a separate sheet with the references info printed on it. then you're good to go.

ya ask them before you put them on or write: references furnished upon request

or in my opinion and many others, all this line does is fill up space on your resume. The resume is made to sell yourself. you can give them references later. I've gotten this advice from alot of HR people, as i am interviewing heavily right now. If i were you i would not put it on my resume. Not that i have the best resume ever but i have gotten help on it from a lot of very professional people and would be glad to share it with anyone if you PM me.
