Why is skiing so far behind snowboarding?

First of all i dont give a fuck about tricks, you can argue till the cows come home about which sport has more tech/ better looking tricks etc. blah blah pretzl zomg blah. fuck off dont talk about it here.
okay,
So in terms of creativity and just general scene and people.. why is skiing so far behind when half your friends ski, and half snowboard? you all ride together and all that, but as soon as someone becomes good enough to do somethign with skiing why do they fuck it all up and conform to being so skier. yet the snowboarder is not at the same level and so much cooler etc.
i know why i think it is. but i want to hear what you have to say.
oh by the way its cuz of this website. every single skier is on here watching the same guy and idolizing the same guy and therefor becoming the same guy. snowboarding people are takin influence from other things and not watching just one snowboarder do the same trick with the same style. different groups of snowboarders will follow different trends and create new things and the better vibes, a more diverse industry, and more room for growth of the sport. MORE MONEY.
hesh skiers are starting something, sure following snowboarding but creating a niche that is hated on way to much and DIVERSIFYING our sport.
I would love to see everyone spend a few months during season to ski without this site. dont follow the frontflip or pretzl trend and just do what you want, just ski the way you want and not how someone else does who is a million times better. figure out your thing and go with it and skiing would get so much cooler.
lame.

I wish it wasn't.
then we could just worry about the skiing, and not worry about how tight/baggy our pants are.

i see no problem with skiers dressing similarly in freeskiing, its not like it affects skiing style. I have a tight group of ski friends, there are six of us and we all dress pretty stereotypically freeskier, bright colors, pretty baggy, the works. but we all have different skiing styles, one focuses on style more, one is good at spinning both way, im kind of a huckster, ect.
i kinda like the fact that skiers have an identifiable style because i feel like it brings us a sense of unity
just my 2 cents

More styles /trends = more niches for new companies to cater to
New styles = maybe the recreational skier starts to think "hey, thats pretty similar to how I like to dress off the hill, maybe skiing can fit into my life"
I don't think any one posting is trying to sound elitist or above the rest, we're just really in favor of growing the ski culture, in terms of depth. Every other subculture has a particular way that its members dress, and we think that if people were more accepting of alternative ways of expressing oneself, it would be better for skiing as a whole and as a subculture.

yeah i def agree that more styles and more diversity would lead a growth in the industry. in snowboarding for example. the companies are as diverse as the riders, you have airblaster, stepchild, holden, and then more mainstream companies. it all contributes to creating many different facets to the sport and many different consumers...i think skiing also is beginning to diversify (think surface) but far its far from where it needs to be.

is skiing not diverse at the moment?
walk into your local ski shop and look around at the different styles in there. here are the different styles we cater to at the shop i work at:
- racers
- weekend warriors (moderately priced, low key style)
- park skiers (orage, spyder, helly hansen)
- freeriders (helly hansen, arcteryx)
- eurostyle (mostly fitted skiwear)
remember that freeskiing is simply a subculture of skiing as a whole and there probably isn't much room for more diversity/different styles. with snowboarding it really doesn't matter since the demographics are pretty much the same except for the extremely small group that does wear the speed suits and ride race boards.

You pretty much said that snowboarders are cooler and we should be more like them.

um no he just said that there is skiing-freeskiing-racing-rec weekend warriors- euro style. and snowboarding has very few sub divisions so there are alot of snowboarding styles adn theyre arent as many freeskiing styles because it is a smaller group of skiign.

does it really matter how people dress and what size your jacket is? you say their are more types of snowboarders than skiers, which is bs cause skiing has so many niches. and even if it didn't it doest make snowboarding "further ahead"

Didn't think I'd ever find a thread asking why skiing was behind snowboarding in terms of clothing.

When people refer to skiing as a "subculture" it makes me want to stab myself in the eye with an icepick.

i havnt read most of this. But after the points were thrown out by the creator, everyone started getting waaaaaaaaaaaaay to defensive and asking why you cant just have fun and dont have to be "cool" like snowboarding. I understand exactly what he is saying, and its completely true. I love watching ski videos. In no way do i dislike skiing at all. No one in here can deny the fact that snowboarding is much more diverse than skiing. Hesh is more or less unanimously hated by everyone here, or just tight pants in general. Having fun is the most important thing in both sports. And everyone here is taking what he said and twisting it like its a bad thing. Diversity is good. And when people realize that what the thread creator said is right, skiing will grow a lot. You guys cant take this as a put down to skiing, you cant view it as a comparison. It needs to be viewed as a unique idea. What he said is not in any way insulting skiing, its only meant to help an already amazing sport become even better

skiing is not behind snowboarding. people are always saying this, and it pisses me off.
sking is different than snowboarding, whether you want it to be or not. we do different tricks, we have different style. though this dude pete or whatever thinks that all skiers have the same style, any true skier can tell you there is a very large difference between tom wallisch style and simon dumont style. were our own sport, and we can choose what we want. if we think hesh is gay, too bad snowboarding, suck it. skiing>snowboarding. period.
