For those that smoke marijuana

looking deeper at the friends that i smoke with today kinda made me have a revelation. ive realized that everyone definitely smokes weed to escape something. now i know, people are gonna say "nahh i smoke weed cuz its dope shit! im just a partier." but then i'd say that person struggles with self esteem issues and has constantly strived for approval.

doesnt it make sense? i know thats a really shitty example but gimme a break, im high.

but anyways, that makes sense for the area i live in, most of the stoners I know are all doing really bad in school because they are trying soo hard to be cool, then they need a stress relief from the shitty school marks so they smoke more.

Well, certainly once it becomes an addiction you smoke to escape the state of sobriety.

Other than that, it's more about the reasons a person might have to be uncomfortable with their own state of sobriety, whether it be low self-esteem, or an entirely different issue. Every action one makes is an escape in one form or another. You can eat food to escape from hunger, or in many cases to escape from boredom or unhappiness.

Many, many people have problems accepting the way life/the world is, and it can manifest in many different forms.

I didn't really make any point there, but ironically I'm a little drunk right now  and not high at all.

I agree, its fun and all, but its definitely a way to escape.  but if you dig deep enough into anything its just an escape.  like all other hobbies.

I dont smoke to escape anything. maybe many people do but i dont. I used to. i used to smoke cause i was super depressed and it brightened my day. but i quit for year and half and then started again. not to do it for escaping any particular reason, but just to do it once and while cause its a cool feeling. Like said before you can pertain this to anything. i go skiing cause its fun and a great feeling and makes me happy.

Thats exactly the point. Think about it, people do things to get the certian feeling they want, or to escape the state they're in at the moment. You go on newschoolers to escape boredem, or you smoke weed to get away from reality and your shitty life, it's just that weed isn't a very smart, healthy, or safe way to escape from your life. None of that was directed at you you just had a good example with NS.

wouldn't everything fall under that catagory? Every time you do something it usually has a purpose, that being an outcome you desire? So how would smoking weed differ from doing homework? Both are choices you make because you want a specific outcome or feeling? Every time I take a piss I want to a acheive a certain outcome or feeling. That being one of an empty bladder.
Perhaps I missed the entire point of your post and rereading what i just wrote only confirms this suspicion.... I haven't slept.

I'd say one of the main reasons I smoke weed is to get away from stress, but then again I also ski for that reason too so I don't see it as a problem.

My life used to revolve around smoking. I decided to quit and I feel better for it. I recently started again after a year of not, but only when I nordic ski. I am older than most of you guys on NS so I am coming from a little bit of a different place, but I honestly am not trying to escape when I smoke. I really just do it to have a little buzz when I nordic. I nordic at night after work or skiing to stay fit which has to do with that whole being older thing. If you are one who smokes to escape I think thats fine, you could be doing a lot worse. And no, weed is not physically addictive, it can be psycologically addictive, but so can anything in life including the chemicals released during activity such as skiing.

I disagree. It's only the stoners and kids who smoke *to be cool*, and smoke too much too often who end up using it as an escape. And yes, I would say it's mostly kids who do this. But there are more responsible smokers in the world who are more how you say, smart about their usage.

Once somebody breaks their moderation, which again happens to the developing brain most often they become escape users. This is one step towards addiction.

Kids in america are too uneducated about the drugs they are using. instead of saying dont smoke its bad, there should be some information that if you do decide to smoke that one should wait until the appropriate age when the brain is more developed to expirament with drugs.

I hear what you're saying. One of my roommates smokes a ridiculous amount of weed and just sits there all day playing video games. He even misses his classes, I think he's just trying to escape his life.

Yeah, I am completely aware of that, although there is still some question about whether there are small degrees of physical addiction to marijuana. That being said, mental addiction is a very real thing and what I'm talking about.

Also, to clarify my words, I agree with those who say everything is an escape. Pissing to escape a full bladder was a perfect example. Because something is an escape doesn't make it inherently bad. It's more about the reasons you might want to escape and your thought process.


Also, I love weed and I smoke it pretty frequently. That doesn't change the fact that it is an escape and can be either a positive or negative influence in many ways.

Everything is more enjoyable high.

I dont have to smoke. If I'm offered some, I'm down. For example, I was at a party last night and I was really high. It was a lot more fun. I didn't escape anything. It used to be that I just wanted to smoke to escape boredom. Not anymore.

You are all over the road my friend. I just finished reading your thread about how lucky we are to be alive and how precious being alive is and then you right this. I would support a decision in which you stop smoking and get your thoughts together, maybe take a good hard look at your life and make a concious effort to move forward in a positive direction for yourself.

Wow for a stoner revelation there is actually a shred of truth behind this. I like smoking weed, but i dont really have anything to escape so i haven't been doing it that much, only when i ski. When im pissed or stressed though i definitely toke more. Where I really noticed this though is with my friend. Kid smokes weed like  a fucking bonfire and im almost certain its cause he needs to get laid. Ive tried to help the kid, but his stonerness doesnt help the motivation or confidence. You reading this pukas?

^thats the problem. people think that they can't have fun inless they are high, drunk or on pills. This might sound like your mom but it is true that you can have fun without being messed up. Once you can have fun sober then i would say that it's Ok to dabble in some drugs here and there. If you think that you can't have fun inless your high then you will have some serious addiction problems. Sorry for sounding like your Mom

im old enough to say now that i smoked way too fucking much in highschool.... if i had replaced that with alcohol it probably would of been a lot better in the end. i would of got way more pussy, had more fun, got better grades, wouldnt of gone through all the shit i had to deal with


i remember so many nights wherei couldnt do my homework cause i had smoked myself retarded that day and fell asleep at 6pm


but shit happened for a reason i believe. I needed to get high as possible all the time back then so thats how it was

any mind altering experience can be related to escaping something. from drugs to athletics (such as skiing). ive also found people to smoke because their buddies are doing it, thus the title of a social drug. but yeah whatever helps you escape whatever plagues you; stress, family issues, school... etc. go ahead. not condoning it at all as it may not be the best way to go about things, but whatever floats your boat do it. a friend of mine used to abuse drinking heavily and since the person has started smoking weed, my friend hasn't touched alchy in over a month.

smoking helps me cope with stress. its not a problem because whenever I smoke, its after a hard day of class/studying/errands, and I would just be sitting around my apartment anyways.  I too have ADD.  whereas I used to smoke and not do my work, I now try to smoke after my work is done.  if I am not done with my work, then its no problem anyways, because I realized that although I am bad at working when I am really high, if I wait til my friends go home and I am alone and just a little bit high, it really helps me focus.  some of the most effective work comes out of me when its midnight and I am still a little burnt.  I just open the books and get crackin.  although I tend to work slower, I am more thorough and less distracted.

I think it is true that weed is an escape though.  but its also fun.  like when you smoke on vacation you arent trying to escape anything.  you have no responsibilities besides having fun.

yea i always struggle with why i smoke...but not too bad of a struggle cuz i love it sooo much haha.  i think it just brings my life to a whole new level of experience.  when i'm skiing high i feel the most pure elation in the world.  granted skiing not high is almost as good, but after a nice fatty blunt in the woods, creepin back onto the trail and those first turns are pure bliss.

i smoked a few times a day up until superbowl sunday where i got caught (i go to a boarding school) and honestly i just like to smoke because its fun and makes you look at things differently.  now that i am on drug testing and cant smoke at all any more i wish i still could and would just smoke less i feel like.

Being high doesn't make me unmotivated. Smoking in general doesn't make me lazy. But coming down, holy fuckdamn, I'm such a worthless piece of shit. I used to smoke before work all the time and it went "Yay yay yay, this is fun, yay yay, hmm hmm, yay, having second thoughts... yay? oh shit i dont wanna do anything, fuck i just wanna sit mmm sitting is epic, yes yes, fuck work, sleep yes, awwwwesome" every time.

I don't really know why I smoke... a lot of the time it's boredom. Sometimes I don't even care about getting high I just enjoy the act of smoking and do it to pass the time. I guess if anything I'd say it's to escape reality but being high doesn't really offer a break from the real world it just... makes it more interesting.... I don't get laid enough, so I smoke instead, there's my reasoning.
