Down hill: 0 degree Base 3 Degree Sidewall this tune hooks fast very unpractical
slalom: 0.5 degree base 3 degree sidewall hooks very fast, good for had pack
rec/ general good tune: 1 degree base 1 degree sidewall- this is what most skis come from the factory, works well
any BASE tune over 1 degree is going to SACRIFICE edge grip/hold on ice/hard pack. it will however catch less on rails.
if your going to make a jib specific tune then you could go 2-3 degrees underfoot with a 1 degree side wall tune. i would keep this underfoot only, use standard 1degree base 1degree sidewall through the tips and tails if you every plan on being able to make it down a hill.
so heres what i forgot to mention. as the angle increases on the base bevel edge hold/grip decreases.
as angle increases on the sidewall edge hold increases.
so if you want to make a ski that hold well on ice, you give it a .5 base and a 3 sidewall
if you want it to slide around and NOT hold on hard pack
then you can increase the angle on the base
and decrease the angle on the side wall
the 1 degree base 3 degree tune mentioned above will hook up faster as the edge physicallt were it contacts the snow is in a sharp point were as a 1x1 is a lesser point and will hence not hook up as fast.
I didn't even realize there was side and base tuning. I was thinking about base tuning, I guess. The reason is I had some pretty nasty wipeouts because I couldn't hold an edge today, it was really icy here on the west coast (which I'm not accumstomed to, therefore I don't care much about my edges normally).
Ideally I'd like something that woudl still hold on ice but not catch on boxes/rails. Perhaps I should only bevel/detune underfoot
So I guess 2-3 is too much? This is a park + all mountain ski, by the way.
