Never tried a rail.

Hey i have never tried a rail im going to this year i was just woundering if its hard it doesnt look that difficult. im sure it is. can anyone give me tips?

try a box first. stay sentered, dont lean back at all, eyes at end of rail/box. simple as that for a flat one

It's hard, they are a lot more slippery than they look. One word of advice though, the faster your going, the higher the chance that you're gonna make it. Don't go like too fast your first time but have some good speed, oh yeah and don't lean back, that's what I kept doin at first.

Yah make sure you dont look at your skis, and make sure you work up the courage first, if your scared shitless your probably gonna bail. Slap yourself in the face and scream and swear or whatever it takes for you to get pumped up and then just hit it with confidence.

Ok its like this. I taught my friend who doesnt even ski to grind a summer rail so I think these tips are good:

the most important thing is learning how to get onto the rail. You have to remember to have a nice clean pop and turn the full 90 degrees. the main thing about this is commiting and realy getting the 90 degree turn in, if you pussy out and dont really commit you will hurt yourself. You also have to remember to center your weight. if you notice you are leaning back a bit then try leaning forward more, vice versa.

Once you learn how to get onto the rail properly you need to learn how to stay on, this is the easy part. once you can get on nicely its simply a matter of looking towards the end of the rail and letting your body do the work... I hope Ive helped somewhat

last year was my like first year of downhill skiing more than once in a year. and i did a straight mailbox in 2 trys and then almost got an S rail(got to like 1 foot left then the mountain closed) and boxes are simple. rails are a lot more slippery than yull think, i was really suprised. and yah, don't lean back, that hurts sometimes.

You have to commit yourself, keep the rail under your feet or you're gonna bail. Keep your weight forward, you'll be fine on a small rail for starters.

dont be a pansy and start on a box. Rails are easy. Just watch a ski movie in slow motion on the rails, and emulate the trick. You will bail a few times, but you can learn rails in one night if you giv'er. I learned in one night just from jumping on, screwing up, poppin the skis off and hiking back up like 80 times.

there are 2 key points that you have to focus on when sliding rails

1. you have to turn the full 90 degrees before you get onto the rail, or else your skis will slideoff to the side of the rail and you will fall, and when you are already 90 degrees its a lot easier to land on the rail

2. lean forward a lot, when i first tried rails i didnt lean forward at all and i fell backward onto my ass a lot and it hurt, so lean forward as much as possible, try sticking your front arm out infront of you and leaning into it, adn that might help you lean forward , but youll almost never fall forward, only backwards, so lean forward a lot

i had this problem and i tried a rainbow rail first...i thought it was easy and then movied on to straight rails...now its a sinch...good luck man

also once you're on and sliding well be concious of your body position all the time. When sliding longer rails I have a tendency to grease the first 3 quarters only to end up falling on my ass because I've subconciously started to lean back a bit. That can also lead to a lot of unintended switch off's like Mike-O was talking about.

i dont pop if i dont have too, i try to just bring my knees up, that way you are already low and centered on the rail, and stay forward, it will feel like you are a lot more forward than u really are.keep a wide stance, and it sometimes helps me to point at the end of the rail(straight from a friend that came straight from shane szocs) have yersaly a day. oh, and dont straighten out, cuz that is hard on the babymakin process ya know

yea uhhh i did my first rail like in april of this last spring so im not that great but just dont lean back cause ur hip will get super sore from hitting the rail. leaning back means ur scared or u have bad balance or something like that. just jump on and stay smooth and just stay over it and its super easy

sray 90 and lean alot more forward than you would thimk. When people firt try a rail they get scared and try to finish the rail as fast as they can so they put there skis forward cause they think they will be finished it faster but then they fall on there ass.

haha, if the mountain closes while you're on a rail, that's not good.

whoever said the skateboard, that makes so much sense. i spin left, but i always skateboard with my left foot forward. which could explain why i always fall when i'm right foot forward on rails. all i gotta do this season is get the unnatty 90 down, and i'll be set on rails, and also set to 270 off! suh-weeeet!

i learned rails on a big plastic tube rail. plastic doesnt slide as fast as steel and it doesnt hurt as much either

my first rail was the up-down double kink a-frame thingy. I would just turn the 90 on the ground and jsut basicly stay centered. I couldnt really jump onto the rail. HTen i tried the mailbox, and i was scared to shit. So therefor i went super ass slow and i ate shit. I made these shoes with flat plastic on the bottom (like soaps but closer to skis cuz thers not groove) and what works for me is just when ur in the air, spot ur landing, then concentrate on the end of the rail. Commit and lean a bit forward if its downhill. Just not to much or ur edge will dig in and ur smash ur face (i cought and edge and i was jacked, my whole day sucked after that)
