It probably seems like I talk about everything but skiing in this cult, but I don't care! Fully Flared is the best skate movie I have ever seen EVER. So good. Everyone should make a point to see it... It's for your own good.
I've never understood why the ski industry is incapable of producing an equivalent to some of these skate films, and even snowboarding films over the years. I think that teddybear crisis was close, but I still watch the old Robotfood films. Good stuff.
Oh but I have an idea -- let's build the same jump in Whistler that we always build, get the same riders to do the same tricks, and employ a cast of 25 photographers to show a slow motion shot matrix style around 'em. That'll be just as good, right?
I dont know why most skate movies look sloppier than Fully Flared. I mean, yes, it was the most amazing skateboard movie I've ever seen, but you'd think with all the money in the skateboard industry, more videos could look like this or better?
I mean when you compare it to other films on a larger scale, it really wasnt that good. Most of the world's filmakers would scoff at the fact that they shot vx1000 footy or any DV footage for that matter.
I guess what I'm saying is that with all the creativity and money in skateboarding, how come this is the only movie that is this amazing?
Skateboard filming sucks because it's just too easy to pick up a DV camera and go film. In snow sports, there's a process that includes tons of setting up, so the filmer may as well just try to make the shots nice while people build jumps, set up rails, etc.
Also, skating is way more tech, so it's boring for the filmer to do the same pan-in pan-out switch the focus kind of stuff while some skater tries ninety-five times to fakie flip sixty stairs. Snow sports take way less tries to nail shots. Especially in the backcountry.
Finally, you can't skate anywhere anymore, so there's no time to set up floodlights and flashes before a cop's giving you a ticket.
On an unrelated note, I only saw MJ's part (it's on the internet, don't tell mom). He found a nice balance between sick creative stuff and mind-boggling tech stuff.
