Importance of excercise in skiing

I dont think alot of kids realize that to ski you actually need to be fairly fit and have alot of core strength. Basically twisting and high impact is the cause of bad back's. And thats about all we do in skiing. Right now it hurts to stand and walk for me on account of my back. I just wanted to give those who dont consider excerciseing important a heads up aso they dont make the mistakes i made. If your back hurts even remotely look into doing some excercise's and stretching and get it back to normal quick or your in for a rough year.

i used to be an instructor, and when i would ride with the freeride team....we always stretched before going up the mtn...i always thought stretching was for losers, until i felt the full effect at the end of the day..and i was pretty impressed

Fitness is very important... skiing, although many think otherwise, is actually a pretty demanding sport physically. A lot of lower body strength and core strength is required... shoulder muscles for those non-park-rats. People often go mental on quad exercises, but that's not good for your knees either if you don't balance out your hamstrings. Super strong abs but no back muscles bad too. Everything's gotta be strong, but balanced, and flexible.

pshh exercise is for fat kids.
but i think that trampolines provide some of the best cross training, they really work your core and balancing muscles and get the larger leg muscles pumped, while also being relatively low impact.

this is really common sense. I mean shit hiking the park 6 hour straight is pretty dam hard if your outta shape and if you didnt kno that stretching is important then you prob have been hurt before. I would say stretching above all is the BEST way to prevent injuries.

yeah like hikin park at high altitudes with a coat on and helmet now that makes you sweat. For skiing if you don't hike park you don't have to have great aerobic endurance but you definately have to be flexible and have good core and leg strength. I stretch every day 1 it helps prevent injury and to do grabs good you have to be flexible. I usually run everday it isn't exactly low impact but it allows me to keep weight down.

ya this it really is so important...i worked out all fall on my legs and core and when i went skiing for the 1st time yesturday, i was able to rip all day. when last year i was tired and my quads burned after a couple runs! so i'm pretty psyched being in shape does make a big difference

so true, stretching and exercise are key to preventing injury, and being able to go harder and long out there on the slopes
