Mid-calf socks under jeans for warmth, ankle with shorts. Unless you can pull off the high socks look which I have seen some people do.

ankle socks for all the time, higher ones for skiing.
I can't usually pull of the high socks thing, I only have on par of high ones that I'll rock occasionally.

I managed to not wear socks at all from April until early November. Yay.
But, usually ankle ones if I need to wear socks.
Usually no socks if I'm skiing or riding, though.
