So i got the orange box, and Half life episode 2, portal, and team fortress 2 didnt work. so i figure my computer is fairly old so i need a new video card that can support these games.
My qusetion is can I install a new video card, like an nvidia 8800, in a computer that is 5 years old? or do I need to get all new software?
It already has an nvidia 440 mx in it, which has 250 mb ram. I have all of the memory I need, i think I need a card that can support directx 9.

you're gonna need a new motherboard if you want any of the newer graphics cards, they are all pci express, which has only been out for a year or so, so you'll have to buy a motherboard that uses pci express, which probably wont fit ur current processor, so pretty much you're gonna have to build a whole new system or buy an older AGP graphics card, which are pretty cheap now, but pci express is sooo much better.

you wont be able to instal la geforce 8800 on a 5 year old computer.
like the dude above me said, all of the new, good video cards are going to be PCI Express.
So, basically if you a computer capable of running games well (especially Orange Box), you will want to get a motherboard with a PCI Express x16 slot, a PCI Express x16 video card, and potentially a new processor to fir the new motherboard.
and you'll need about 2GB of DDR2 memory
