So today was my 21st bday. I went out, got hammered, had some good food etc.. The usual you know? Then my gf brings out this massive box and kisses me on the cheek then says "dont be mad, just open it" Well this huge-ass box was really a series of progressively smaller boxes, untill I got down to an envelope containing 2 plane tickets to Salt Lake City for a 3 day weekend in January.

Here's the dilemma: She's taking me on a 3 day ski weekend in Utah, but she only been skiing a few times in her life, hates the cold, and doesn't own all the equipment. So while I'm absolutely pumped, and amazed that she would do something like this for me, I'm not sure how to approach it. She researched online, but she doesn't know about skiing like I do. She mentioned getting the pass that lets you ski  Alta/Snowbird, the Canyons etc, but with her ability, a 3 day weekend at Wachusett mountain in Mass, would keep her more than challenged. So while I'm looking forward to skiing some real mountains, I'm worried about her not having a good time and what not. How would you guys approach this situation?

go skiing  with her a few times before your trip and get her some lessons. then get her a xxl neon suit to wear

B) Who cares? explain to her that she gave you the most amazawsomest gift ever, thoughtfully wrapped up, and researched might I add, and that youre psyched to help her learn to shredder!
and...
C) marry her.

I don't think worrying about her skill level is the main thing here. She just got you tickets for 3 days of sick skiing. Sow will come beforehand, so teach her or pay for her to get lessons. U guys will be doing doube backflips of cliffs while holding hands in no time. and think about double backs while doing the dirty deed. it's magic really.

Coming from a girl who doesnt ski and doesnt like the cold, that gift should mean a lot more. She's showing she's dedicated and she wants to spend time with you while you're doing something you absolutely love. None of my girl friends ski, and they would NEVER do that for their bf, or even anything close.

That being said, if she does complain or is going slow, don't lose your patience. If you stay with her and dont make hints about how badly you wanna go ski harder stuff, she'll probably just be like "you go ski and have fun, ill wait in the lodge for a bit" Then you get to ski, she's happy and warm in the lodge, and everything is good in the world.

And since you're going in January, you've got all of december to give her some lessons! Plus, have her invest in a really warm coat and gloves (and of course they have to be cute.. check out roxy and orage stuff) before you go, then there will be less complaining on her part about the cold.

Yeah man.  It sounds like you seriously found a keeper.  Nice work!  But, perhaps take her to your local hill a few times, or ask her to go whenever you go.  It sounds like she cares about you, and if skiing is one of your biggest passions, then i'm sure she can bring it into her life as well.  And I recommend staying in Park City.  I'm not sure if she's into shopping, or fancy things, but PC is kinda fun, and there's plenty of Apres ski activities, and nice places to eat, shop, etc.   The only downfall is if you want to ski Alta/bird  it'll take over an hour to get there..... but the Canyons is 5 minutes away. 

Maybe another option would be the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird.  It's huge, pretty fancy, and has a spa, etc. for her.  Also, it's hill side so if she only wants to ski half day, she can go in to the spa or something while you rip.  It's only like 30 minutes from downtown SLC which has plenty of dining and shopping and theaters, etc.

ya man, alot of guys would kill to have a girlfriend that knows what they really love and actually tries to bring both of you together doing that. so try and go skiing with her as much as possible before hand, and once you're there you'll have an sickter time when she's ripping the bigger slopes with you

Its a blessing and a curse. 
You really wont be able to ski any real terrain without ditching her somehow.  Putting her in a lesson might be an answer, but she might not be too happy about that
Just make her do the filming hah

that's pretty much what I did with my ex..  Annnnnyway ya, do this.

Well with my ex she rode park and I hit jumps and whatnot and she just skied and watched.  But it's ok cause I told her park ettiquette, so she didn't fuck up.

go get first tracks while she's sleeping.  go get her and have a good time with her on her part of the hill b/c if you're with her it'll be sweet no matter what.  when she gets tired, have something planned for her so she doesn't feel burdensome or like you don't still want to please her.  finish off the day ready to charge again b/c you've been chillin, resting up on the groomers.  she sounds like a diamond found in a streambed of pebbles.  definitely a keeper.  oh yeah, for you and your girl to have fun each night, you're best bet will be park city.

Just enjoy your time with her.

You'll have other chances to find sick terrain, but not a girl like that.

Take her out skiing with you as much as possible before the trip, and get her a lesson with a good instructor every time. She cruises with the instructor for a couple hours, learn her stuff, then comes out and shreds with you after that.

My only advice is to NOT try to teach her yourself. It almost never works out well, I've seen it go wrong too many times!

But yeah, once you get out there, just enjoy cruising with her, and mabye sneak a run or two on the gnar stuff when she gets tired or something. Have fun man!

teach her how to ski.She will get better and she will aventually be more enjoyable to ski with because she will be able to keep up. shes more important then one little trip

I am going to take her as much as possible before we go, but i'm a poor college kid, and she just graduated from college and started her job, so neither of us can afford to stick her in a bunch of lessons. Things had been a little rocky in our relationship, especially over the summer (her fault), but been good lately, and this present really blew my mind. She is amazing. She said she wanted to do it for me because it something I never would have done for myself, which is true because i couldn't justify spending that much money on a weekend just for me to ski in UT. I'm gonna buy her some nice outerwear for x-mas. And the more I think about it, the more fun I think it will be. She wont want to ski all day like I will, so even if she just wants to ski with me in the am, then go sit in the hot tub 'till I get back, i'm sure we'll both have a great time. I'm pumped!

did you simply ask her what her expectations are while they are out there?  As mentioned it is a blessing and a curse.   I guess I would find a group to hang with and then follow her lead with whether she wants to take a few runs or not..   It would suck.....  Here,  what if you gave her a present to go to the Mall of America, but you didn't allow her to go into any stores?  Maybe thats too harsh of a analogy..   Best to suck it up, and follow her lead since it is her present to you... 

BTW  - asked my gf what she thought and her immediate response was that you are an asshole..  Not that that matters...  She wants to know what the two of you have talked about.

well definatly  try finding her a pair of boots that fits her nicely and borrow some good intermediate skis so she can learn how to ski ok. make sure she have all the stuff needed to stay warm on the hill.
Chances are, she wont be able to ski all day anyway. So you ski with her in the morning or in the afternoon and spend some time shredding while she's having a massage or spending some time in a hot tub then  go spend some time together in some cool place and eat good food
 this way she wont be hating on skiing for the rest of her life and you'll be able to ski  some nice runs without feeling bad for her.

That's what I did when I got to the hills for the first time with my gf and we've been together for 7 years now.
