well the last thread I made on guns made me really angry and I overreacted. I dont like using harsh language but the thread drew out so many dumb people that I got so pissed. so I'm making this thread so I can clear things up.
I am against the right for everyone to own a gun. not everyone should be able to. obviously people convicted of violent crimes shouldn't. we already have laws to prevent this. but what are the dangers of guns?
some people are irrate, short-tempered, or insecure and believe they have something to prove. most murders are not premeditated, and if they are, the killer may have decided they were going to kill the person hours or a few days beforehand. the guy who kills his cheating wife the next day technically commits first degree murder, but he didn't "premeditate" on it much. so maybe if he had some time to cool down, he might not have done it. we cant know this for sure, but if the guy has a gun, he is definitely not less likely to commit murder.
but how many times have you read in the paper "the two were seen having an altercation outside in the parking lot. so-and-so then went to his car, retrieved his firearm, and shot so-and-so." or something along those lines. this happens all the time.
we can't screen against people who are likely to commit these types of heat-of-the-moment type murders. its not possible, we dont have the resources to do intensive psychological tests necessary to do so, and even if we did, it wouldnt guarantee anything.
so, that being said, wouldnt you think these murders would be less likely to occur without guns? yes, I know you can kill someone with a knife. but physically assaulting someone, even with a weapon, takes a lot more effort than shooting someone with a gun. you cannot argue against that. strength, coordination, and determination come into play, because you have to physically overpower the person on some level, even if you come up from behind them with a bat. things can go wrong much more easily, and it can take many stab wounds or blows to actually kill someone. you also have to have determination. I might be able to shoot someone under the right circumstances, but stabbing them would be harder. its gross.
so, criminals will get ahold of guns. but it would be more difficult for them. how difficult? I don't know. but you cant argue against this. how do most convicted felons get ahold of guns? well, a person with a clean record will purchase dozens of guns legally, and then sell them without any discretion for a profit. if that person cant buy them in the first place, that scenario wont happen. banning guns will also make them very expensive since they become a black market product. intelligent, career criminals will probably still get guns, but they are a rarity.
to people who hunt: guns are fine for this. the types of murders I described earlier generally involve handguns.
that being said, I was thinking of purchasing a gun. I trust MYSELF with a gun. but there are a lot of people I don't trust. that doesnt make me a hypocrite at all. I think it might be fun to shoot one, and thats it. me not buying a gun is not going to change the second amendment. and I dont feel so strongly against guns that I am going to organize any type of movement to make them illegal. so thats it.
I think that just about covers everything. if youre going to call me a retard or a hypocrite, try reading what I wrote.
