stiff twins for all around

I currently own a pair of the orriginal Line Darksides (all grey ones) which have served me well but I'm thinking it is time for something new.

I want a ski which is similar in shape but stiffer that my darkside and that I can go a bit shorter, maybe 175 range, whithout loss of stability. The two things that complicate the issue is that I am a heavy skier (220lbs) and I am a die hard old style look turntable user (full 360deg rtation version) So I want a ski that has the twi tip, good stiffness and that would allow the mounting of any binding (no integraded binding crap)

Skis I am considering: Atomic Tweak, Rossi Scratch FS, Nordica Beast 72TT, Line Skogen, maybe a vokl V series. I liked the Head Mad trix when I skied them last year, but have concerns about their durability since I saw my freind break two sets last year and a few other break them on the hill.

If anyone has some experience with any of these skis that could offer up an oppinion or sugest another ski that would be a great help.

not the skogens, those are ridiculously flexy... i'd suggest maybe the scratch, i think they're pretty stable for a twin

The Public Enemy is a great all mountain ski. It's just wide enough to float in slush and powder and it's got a good enough sidecut to handle the hardpack. They are fairly stiff and are built with thick edges to handle rail impacts better...I think they rule...

yeah I am getting the Dynastar Troublemaker and I just read in a description that they are good freeriding/all mountain skis too, but thats just what I read.

The Scratch isn't that stiff, and for your weight I think the Volkls would flex a lot too (V's anyway, I dont know about V-Legends or Pros).

So after some further research I have narowed my choices down to these:
- Rossi Scratch FS
- K2 Public Enemy
- Head Mad Trix
- Dynastar Trouble makers

The only ones I have riden so far are the Mad Trix last season. I loved the feel of them but am concerned about their durability. Can anyone give me an idea of how the others compare to the mad trix in terms of weight, stiffness and groomer carving prowess. Also if anyone has any coments about the durability of any of these that would also be welcome.

scratch is wery flexible ski. Old tweaks are stiffer than the new ones and I have heard that the new mad trix is bomb proof

yeah the scratch is very flexible....the tm is stiffer. never ridden the other two

if u want durability u want the public enemy. u couldnt do shit to that ski if ur life depended on it. its a solid wood core which makes it just heavy enough to be really stable, and stiff enough to be a good all mountain ski.

Nordica Beast is very stiff, I'd it's the stiffest of those. And it's also an excellent carving ski.
But in newschool skiing Nordia isn't that good compared to those others. I'd choose Mad Trix or Scratch.

Based on what I have heard here and elseware I think I'll be looking at either the Public Enemy (PE)or the Mad trix (MT) come this season. I am still wary about the durability of the MT
though. Can anyone confirm that Head has taken action to improve the ski. Also can anyone compare the PE with the MT in terms of stiffness carving ability and weight since I already have a very good idea of how the MT skis.

Man this is way too soon to be thinking of skiing, but I'm bored I guess.

I ski on the V-Pros - they are the stiffest twin I've flexed (awesome all-round ride too), but I've heard the PEs and TMs are pretty stiff too (very similar dimensions to the V-Pro). Best thing to do is go to a shop and flex them yourself, then demo - some skis feel stiff but ski 'soft' and vice-versa. Don't ask people on here for opinions on suitable skis, because 90% of people have only ever ridden one or two models and will just tell you to get the ones they have. Demo as many as you can and base your decision on that.

Also, I don't think a 220lbs guy should be on a 175, unless you are die-hard park-only. I'm about 185lbs and ride a 190 V-Pro - I'd definately go longer (195 maybe) if they made anythign longer. If you're looking for a lot of stability, you won't find it on a 175, end of story. The V-Pro comes in a 190, and so did the original MadTrix (not sure about next year's). I think the Scratch/TM/PW all end at about a 180.

listen to bambam--the vpros are quite stiff and 175 is DEFINITELY too short if you are 220. I am 190 and i ride airstyle NT 180's which are pretty stiff for twins....if you can find them. they kick ass all mountain. it will be my 20th season this winter and they are the best skis i've ever had

'The skis flex pattern is designed for landing switch and specifically park riding.' right from 4frnt propoganda, certainly not what I'm looking for.

The V-Pro looks nice but doesn't have as much sidecut as the MT or PE, or even the TM. I'll have to get some demoing in at the begining of the season (which is far too far away). If the PEs ski like the MTs then they would be my choice, I like the construction the best and I already know that the MT skis like I want.

And yes I'm heavy, but living in Ontario I have no need for a fat ski like the Seth Pistol. ON isn't known for its powder days.

Yeah - demo those 4 skis I'd think. All very nice mid-fats that should suit you nicely. They all have quite similar sidecuts actually - check them out:

V-Pro: 113/83/105
PE: 112/80/103
TM: 112/78/102
MadTrix: 110/74/105

I thought the V-Pro might not have enough sidecut for me, but I love it - I don't like really short turns anyway.

I say try to demo those four and go with what you like and what you can get a good deal on - you'd be happy on any of them I'm sure. It would be worth at least trying something longer than you're used to - you'll probably prefer it.

BamBam, I hear you on the length. The other side of the story is that I'm also only 5'7' so I can get away with a bit shorter. I'll probably stick to 180mm lenght or so, thats what my Darksides were and I liked the length of them.

Here is hoping I can actually find a demo for these skis.

if you dont want a fat ski, id reccomend the v-expressions...i live in ontario as well, so i dont need a fat ski, but i wanted a stiff one, so i went with the v-expressions instead of the v-pros.

I have 03-04 volkl expressions with the dumb graphics but damn they are stiff. I can carve soo well with them.. they carve comparable to my atomic 916s and are strong on icy pipe walls definitely opt for a 182 if u weigh 220

mo-rod, that kind of surprises me to hear. It seams this is the discription that I see from Volkl for the 03' model 'A less-expensive twin tip for new school pipe and park skiing; Same sidecut and Sensorwood core as the V Legend, but with a softer, more forgiving construction, and a more pronounced twin-tip. This is a hard ski to beat for the first-time jib ski purchaser'. Did they beef it up for 04'?

My other skis are also Atomic 9.16s. You say the expresion really have some guts on the groomers? I'm still a bit aprehensive about the large turning rad, 29m for the 180cm version. And yeah, the graphics are fugly.

2004 Volkl V series - there is no V-Legend next year.

And height has absolutely no relevance to ski length. Like I said, demo different lengths and decide from that. I was hesitant to ride long skis at first too - I went fro ma 176 to a 190 and felt much more comfortable on them from the first run.

zoke, I have the 168cm 03-04 expressions. the graphics are hideous and with the permission of the volkl rep I'm covering them up with volkl stickers cause theyr' dumb, it has a basketball on it. anyway, I found them to be nice and stiff. they are a full wood core in contrast to my 1080s which I wont be using anymore because volkl is sponsoring me. skiing in Ontario u need a stiffer ski and the expression is that ski. full wood core is great.
they are good for beginners because they are responsive, but when i say beginner I mean beginner in the park, u still gotta be a good skiier to use the ski because they are stiff

mojos have the best warrenty. heavy, but bomb-proof. even if you can fuck them up on rails, they will send you a new pair.

first the longer u go the softer the ski! second atomics are not stiff. they are medium on the pectrum of flex but closer to soft. stiff is armada, volkl, PE, and anythign else with a full wood core.

salomon's are the same in 2002-03/2003-04 model they are indentical. salomons are soft as shit. if u live in ontario u know they cannot hold and edge. Everyone listen to SAMCaylor in this case he knows what he's talking about ride volkl!

Well, I am heavily leaning towards the Mad Trix. I've actually skied them and liked them allot, plus on paper they seem to be the best suited for my intended use (Ontario parks and ripping groomers with the occasional big mountain trip). Still a debate as to what length to go with, 172 or 180 (I'm 220lbs). But I am deffinitly not going for the system version, want to mount my look turntables.

Does anyone know if there are any differences between the 01/02, 02/03 & 03/04 models? are they all wood core?

p.s. I will never get a solomon ski, and never a non wood core ski. I need a ski to have a firm tip and be robust. Solomons are neither as a rule and arguably by design.

while the mad trix is a good ski I've seen far too many pairs snap off a tip because the tip isn't as sturdy as the volkl expression (almost same ski exactly) I would suggest going with the PE or a fatter volkl. the grey volkl (03-04) I think its a pro. its one size fatter than my expression skiis really well. I skied it at craigleith one day in the pipe and they skiied really well. if you get the 180 in that you will be in great shape for the year.
