No more jumps

because of this kid in(WA)and his lawsuit(won) the parks we all know and love will be changed dramaticly!! its already started... due to this (5+ major resorts) will have NO snow features tomorrow. and thats just the start, I'm sure there will be many more to come.. THANKS ALOT KID- U single handedly KILLED terrain parks.

I am sorry the kid got hurt, but he was the one that made HIS own decision to go off the jump and should have looked before he leept and with all the signage and park maintaince and everything the park crew did and resort did to make them as safe at possible,, you still have people that come in the park that DONT belong in there.

Please elaborate. I haven't heard anything about this. I imagine vail was the unfortunate loser in this situation and affects all their properties (Vail, Heavenly, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek and Keystone). This really sucks. We all choose to take those risks. Not getting loot from the resort when I fuck myself up is one of those risks.

yeah right better then N* and sierra's. but heavenly is adding more jibs each night. check out saminfo.com more about the lawsuit and what might be happening. it was boothcreek in the lawsuit.. soo N* and sierra will be affected.

I cant see how that kid won the lawsuit (expensive lawyers I guess) he was hitting the same jump earlier in the week and on the night in question he over shot the landing by nearly 50 feet... the jump didnt change, wtf was the kid thinking

In the case the lawyers said that since the cat driver just eyeballed the jump rather than actually measuring the angles and length/height that it was unsafe... Jonahs/Eric how often if ever do park builders get out tape measures and shit to make it perfect?

^^^^They dont.. they will measure the length and normally have a inclinomitor in the cat to measure the pitches.. but normally designers and builders have had the cat experience and riding experience to fill the gaps... also the park crew to make sure that the jumps are safe... guinnie pigs. Also it is literlally impossible to keep a jump at specific spec's.. snow changes too much. weather,temp, rider use all change them too quick. this is what all resorts have been trying to fight as well as all builders is standardizing spec's of a jump...because you CANT be 100% true with consitency.

Maybe this can bring things to conclusion once and for all....the industry has been battling this problem for years now.

I suggest resorts bring in the idea of a park pass, 50 bucks for a season or 5 bucks for the day (funds going directly to insurance hikes, park budget, etc). Hopefully a resort could purchase supplemental insurance for the park area and close it off to the public.

A lot of resorts will have a hard time keeping people out of their park, but roo is already in a designated area away from crowds. I really think Alpine could be on the front lines of this battle if they wanted.

I realize a good lawyer can find a way around a waiver, but this is what needs to be done IMO.

To take your idea further I think that parks should give park riders some kind of wristband or such so that they are recognized. Anyone in the park without one is automatically thrown out of the resort on the spot. This would eliminate the problem of the families going through the park and those bitch ass little kids getting in the way.

For season pass holders they could make a sick wristband with rasta colors or some cool color scheme of your choice and for people who buy the day pass maybe one of those cheap plastic ones. Charge an extra $40 for season pass with park access and an extra $7 for day ticket with park access. All this money would go directly to funding bigger and better park features.

Someone should sit at the top entrance to the park and everyone going in has to flash the wristband. Its much cheaper to do that than to have to shell out 13 million to some asshole who cased a jump because he sucks. If anyone gets hurt in the park without a wristband it is completely on them since they were trespassing illegally.

That being said I think there should only be park passes to the more difficult parks. Those little progression parks with the little 5 foot jumps and ride on boxes should be open to everyone, that way idiots who don't know what they're doing won't get too seriously hurt.

How does it affect Heavenly since eavenly is a Vail resort?  It's wrong that some idiot who did something stupid can fucking ruin it for everyone.  Heavenly just needs to step up and say NO and build one of the sickest parks next season.  The same goes for all other resorts affected.

And further more, the reason every mountain is getting affected, is because or INSURANCE, the insurance companies put premiums and the cost to have Park insurance through the roof so that only big resorts will prob be able to pay, and its a lot easier to just plow you park than pay a shitload to have a park. I know Im waiting to buy a pass until I know who is going to build a sick park with jumps.

I fully agree,  If there is not a good enough park at Heavenly there is no reason to go there. I will not buy a pass to a resort with a shitty park.  I am not the only one,

fuck that....parks are for the people, and everybody who's jumping or jibbing in a park has to know that nobody is forcing you to jump, then if you drop and you make hurt..it's your problem my friend, but don't pay that with the ski station because then the snowparks will change a lot, and this is a bullshit!...

They have already affected the industry. Sounds like most resorts renew there insurance policy's in June. That is when we will know how much we will change. If anybody can sue for a crash in the park then premiums will skyrocket. If the new policy cost out weighs the mountains park following, they might think park is not worth it. Nobody knows the true consequences but the insurance companies are running the numbers right now.

Let me say that this is not an Alpine problem, this is a industry wide problem. All USA resorts will be affected to an extent. How much, is to be determined. Hope for the best.

Park pass sounds good for the larger parks. It will reduce the amount of beginners that just ride up to the big features and get in peoples way. I would definitely pay for a park pass.

With the cost of season passes already increasing. Are people really going to be willing to pay extra to go into the parks. I ask because the park pass would have to be sold as an addition, not as a seperate pass in itself. If resorts sold them as an exclusive pass alone, they would start to lose money in a huge way.

yeah i agree with you.. the kid shouldnt have been there and needed to be held to his actions. but the + is they are trying to appeal the case and change the verdict... so cross your fingures.

yeah i wont be surprized that more mountains do go to the park pass thing.. and normally is only5-20$ and normally goes back into the parks budget...so kinda like a fund raiser. but with how lawsuit happy people are these days I'm sure they can still find a loop hole in those too. and as johnas said this affects ALL resorts.. not just spec. ones.

you guys should really push the park pass idea to Carrig.  if you needed more money you could do  TPC invitationals and rail jams.  Park Passes are the way i see this needs to go.
It makes the parks safer because only experenced park riders will speend the extra dime.
It makes it more enjoyable for the park riders because you dont have to worry about whats on the other side of a feature.
Also bigger and more visable warning signs, the ones @ high roller are so small and i dont even think there are any @ powderbowl.

You guys need to remember the Park Pass is not the answer.
The lawsuit that took place at Snow Summit in the 90's, Summit had the first park pass. A rider crossed under the ropes into the Park and got hurt on a feature. He sued the mountain and won. The courts said the resort was in the wrong and did not do enough to keep him out of that area. He even admitted to cutting to rope. Kinda crazy. This lawsuit has kept most mountains away from a "Park Pass". Well at least here in the states. This current lawsuit needs to be lost in the court of appeals. If this lawsuit is won buy the plantiff it will most definatly affect all pending lawsuits. It is crazy how law works. Like when people started sueing the tabacco companies, one person won and it opened the doors to others. Flat out insurance companies won't insure mountains with terrain parks if they know they will end up paying out millions of dollars.

heavenly does a pseudo "park pass" with the soldiers park each spring.  rope off high roller and build the park the riders want.  i would be willing to pay the "park pass" fee with associated super waiver on top of my regular pass fee. the soldiers get away with charging 200 bills just to ride their park for a week and heavenly management is willing to close down half of high roller to the public each spring for a month. 

the precedent is there already for a pay to play park at heavenly.  it can be a marketing ploy for management "gaper free advanced park only at heavenly", it will benifit the riders with the absence of spores learning to make pizza turns down the pipe, and it will give some revenue to the park crew.  

i just don't know if there are enough regular high roller riders to justify spending the money (cat time, snowmaking, and park crew) to justify building a park just for us.  maybe if sierra closes their parks the extra riders could justify it but that would be a tough sell to management.

well the park pass thing isnt even on the table right now, but it is a idea maybe for the future. and if a resort DID do a park pass you would have to do it to ALL parks.. otherwise your adding to the problem of lawsuits... example rider wants to ride bg park, but gets turnedaway since no park pass. so rider goes to smaller park gets broke off... then lawyers say well why didnt you have a park pass for that one..its a park. once you set a standard like that you have to follow throu in all aspects.

Listen guys, I really do agree that all of this is crazy. But I don't think that this sum will be paid out any time soon. It's going to be appealed and appealed until people dont know their ass from a hole in the ground.

Of course everyone is going to be frustrated by this kind of decision. Uneducated people doing ignorant things, a jury off the streets could give a fuck about ski jumps, most of them not even paying attention throughout the process is more than likely.

What we need to do here is to quit bitching over the internet. Stop complaining in threads. E-mail, call, go personally talk to your local resorts manager, your park manager, your park crew. See what you can do. If we want parks to stick around, it needs to be a widespread effort on our part to raise freestyle terrain awareness, to make parks more safe for everyone.

This doesn't include shouting at gapers from the chairlift. It means talking to ski patrol, because if they looked at the numbers they would see more kids get sledded down from terrain park accidents that they didnt belong in, than just going too fast down groomers. Don't just be territorial about your parks.

Think about it from the perspective of some gaper. You see Candide in the X-Games doing 23490834 switchups on boxes and cab cork 10s and it looks so easy and fun. So you wander in there thinking you can do the same. Some retard in a jersey, goggle sag, bandannas everywhere, comes up and tells you that you can't be in there for some reason. Would you pay attention? Probably not.

So maybe a 13 million dollar case isn't in our hands. But our local resorts are. Prevent this from happening to you and your local(however small) resort. If it takes me helping the parkies set up gates or fences or handing out park-awareness flyers, I don't care. I'm down. Do whatever it takes.

It's all about insurence.  The big shot resorts will have paks but premiums will sky rocket for resorts and only the high rollers will be able to pay.

you all gotta read the orignal article... the main reason for suing was becasue the jump was not designed on a computer. uc davis people were responsible for confirming that, btw. from what i have heard, alpine and b-rizzle design their jumps on a computer, for optimal illness. yea yea yea skeet skeet skeet!

^^^ that is sort of true... whether or not they are planned w/ a computer layout, they would still have to break out tapemeasures, inclineometers, and other tools on the hill and have documentation of this for the jump to be "legit" in the mind of the court.

I wouldn't call it dumb, its a way to block out the sun from roasting your face. I personally never wear sunblock on my face because the oils cause my face to break out.

And to all of you, I wouldn't worry too much about jump disappearing, its not going to happen. The demand is still there, the resort that puts the risk into their park will reap the most reward.

I remember a while back people were afraid rails would disappear because some middle aged asshole broke his leg on one at a resort, sued and won compensation.

or he made a mistake, Just like you did and fucked you season and i have done many times.. also if were taking the same kid he is a Quad now and the money os going to pay his medical and shit, he isnt rolling arund in a bentley or anything like that.. Its easy to talk shit but imagine if you were on his side. No legs or arms, no way to get a job no nothin , it was the ony way for him to "live" somewhat comfortably. park skiing is gay anyeays, Go find some lines that scare the shit out of you, il take that over park anyday. its cool though everyone just keep skiing with your eyes closed. Being judgmental is super duper.
