Join that shit. Guaranteed it's one of those stupid things that costs like $20 and maybe an hour of your time and it looks so good on college applications. Just exaggerate how big a deal it is, say you spent a five hours a week on it or something. Then you can stop trying in that bullshit math course, scrape a D+ instead of a C and it'll all balance out.  Maybe.

the ones where you pay money don't mean shit. They send out letters to almost everyone.
Even the real honors societies don't matter since everyone is in them.

I didn't have a lot of activities in high school so it was good to put down whatever I had, even shitty ones like that "society" you can join for achieving whatever the fuck score on the PSAT. I don't know, if the section about your high school activities (non-athletic) is going to be blank, join it. If you have other stuff you're fine.

Hahaha, I would agree with you except I've seen some of these admissions officers. Rather unfortunately, a lot of them are parents. That means they think like parents. That is,
"OMG DID U TIMMY HE IS ON THE HONOR ROLLZ. WEREN'T U FRIENDS WITH HIM WHY AREN'T U ON TEH HONOR ROLLZ TOO!?"
And then they see the "National  Society for Students who got an A  and also Masturbated  Too Much" and they're like "HOLY SHIT THAT MUST BE SUM SUPER ELITE GROUP OF SMART PEOPLE" and you get in. Maybe.
