Park rats and powder hounds

forgive me for asking, but why was it necessary to put labels on people likethis? I really like skiing park, and I enjoy skiing outside the park as well, but for me, nothing beats being in the park. I don't see how calling someone a park rat because all they do is ski in park makes them any better than someone who spends all their time in the woods. Thoughts? hate? props?

I think that if your only terrain is park, say the east coast, being a so called "park rat" would be fine by me, because what you be doing anyways. If your in a sweet pow place, and only ride park, then I think thats dead wrong. It's all about variation, and doing something different. If you ride park in a sweet pow place, that is just absurd, but east coast is fine.

it's because we take after the great master splinter, so the term rat is out of respect for the sensai.

i think we just have to realize that some people just really don't like to ski park, and some just really dont like to ski pow. Skiing is too filled with the stereotype that EVERYONE should ski pow if they got some. Do what you want and fuck the haters

I just like skiing in general. I ski park all day every day untill it snows. Then I am all over the pow and get mad if my friends want to go in the park.

I don't really use the term park rat as a disrespectful thing. It's just a name for kids who hang out in the park
I avoid labels by skiing a little bit of everything. One day I'll be in the park, the next I'll be racing...pow if it's there...backcountry... whatevers good that day.

I bring this up because i was in vermont, and there was a whole lot of really great skiing outside the park, and outside the bounds of the mountain, but where i ski normall doesn't have the greatest park, and has just about nothing outside of the park, so if i go to a place that has a good park, with legit jumps, sure i'd like to hit the woods, and find some powder if there is any, but i'd also like to get in the park so i can learn some tricks on jumps that won't destroy me due to sketchiness

It doesn't have to be a negative label. All I do is ski big mountain anymore, and if you want to come up with a term for that I won't be offended because it's true.

i dont think labels are necessarily bad things. who cares if you like to stick to one type of skiing. if you find something you enjoy doing, do it. skiing is what you make it, and its lucky that there are so many options so there's something for everyone. nobody said you had to split your time between pow/bc, moguls, park, trees, racing, whatever to be a great skier. you can be a great skier all around, or you can concentrate on one area. if it makes you happy, do it.

sure it's not negative, unless it's used in a negative connotation. If i had gone off to ski park, and left my friends to ski the woods, i would have been called a park rat, in a negative way

ahahaha my friend got in a GIANT argument with this chick because she called him a park rat. He didn't care but when he made fun of her for calling him that she flipped shit. ANYWAYS off topic but um... Yea, variation. I have 2 pairs of skis, one for pow and one for park, so depending on the conditions of that day, I'll wear the according skis. If there's pow, you SHOULD go for it, but on the other hand, more for me.

There's nothing wrong with people skiing park on a powder day. In fact, I strongly encourage it.

Uh no it makes the park slow and why not go learn new tricks in the pow on a homemade kicker.

that's not true at all. the friends i was with absolutely took me to school in the woods and off of cliffs. I don't know about two of them, but the one that i ski with most absolutely destroys park

yea me too, if you'd rather be in the park you should just be there. i can understand though how it would be annoying to be called a park rat in a negative connotation. i actually got reprimanded by this lady ski patroller a few weekends ago becuase i skied switch all the way up tila bout 50 ft from the lift line and supposedly i was goin pretty fast. but she was just like, " now i know you guys are park rats and everything but please keep going forward down here." and it was totally legit, but i was like shiiiit i dont ever ski park, i like to ski sw on groomers cuz its fun. who really gives a shit?? let it irk ya, or dont.
