No pipe at bear

so i was on the freeskier website and they have a small write up saying that Bear in Cali' will not be building a pipe this year due to lack of equipment and resorces.

fuck dude(s), this isn't a good sign. Canada's halfpipes are dropping like flies, and now it seams that american halfpipes may be heading in the same direction. Look at B.C./Alberta right now. Whistler has one to two halfpipes, Big White has a superpipe, Silverstar has a halfpipe, COP has a superpipe and that's all.

it's an olympic sport and ski hills are pulling them from their budget because 'not enough people use them for the price it costs to maintain'. if this keeps up we'll have to go to an olympic training facility to ride halfpipe (and probably join the... whatever those olympic people expect you to sign to use their shit).

how can we keep halfpipes? is there any way to make a ski resort owner to think in ways other then profit? or do we all need to get off the rails and start riding pipe more?

i'm just bitter, 'cause i miss halfpipe.

i think theres less pipes from lack of snow than them being totally taken out...

Well it's better to have 1 good pipe than 10 bad ones.

Like in France every resort pretends to build a halfpipe, but they all suck except maybe Avoriaz occasionally when it's shaped or when a competition passes by. There is not 1 resort in France that consistently has a good pipe throughout the season, yet 90% of the resorts claim a halfpipe or superpipe on their website.

In Switzerland we got 4-5 extremely good pipes at our disposal, a lot of other resorts tried it once but gave up. It's better to have a few resorts put up an extremely good pipe (Laax, Davos and in summer Zermatt, Saas-Fee) than to have shitty ones all over the place.

if it costs them money and more of an effort because of a decrease in snow to make a pipe that will just hurt people that cant ski it right there not gonna make it

Freeskier needs to get their shit together, not only is the regular halfpipe open, but they're in the process of building up their superpipe. Not only that, but they just openned up a 50 footer.

That report is for bear valley, not big bear...
Our pipe is still going strong, and is sposed to be -40 with the windchill and snowing the next few days. The report also says there is a lack of the proper equipment, not snow. (unless resources count as snow) So lets all just calkm down, take a breather and remember... its only january, theres lots of snow and skiing left.
also, hippies suck.

you know waht sucks ass hole lee oooo at timberline at hood right now ... all they have is a 13 foot pipe cutter... NO VERT AT ALLL they had an 18 footer and a 22 footer but no its not summer so they dont give half a fuck.

the pipes in washington are usually a joke. They can be decent, but realistically, it is not so great. We get some of the most snow in north america, but forget teaching somebody to build a pipe. Only one ski area has a pipe open right now. The other (ranked high, far far too high, by a world-wide acclaimed ski magazine) still doesn't have their pipe open, despite having a pre dug pipe, with over a 100" base.
I think a large part of it is the will of those who run and maintain the parks; pipe takes a lot of effort and skill to run properly. And at least from my experience, some mountains use some ill-qualified people to take care of these tasks. Although there is something to be said about the lack of people in the pipe. There was a superpipe comp. last season, and a whopping 8 people showed up! But there was a slopestyle just a few weeks later with over 50 people, many of whom could barely do a thing. Until that changes, that determination and ambition may stay rather low.
I just hope pipe doesn't become a highly acclaimed rarety, especially since it is super fun.

it's a downhill spiral though. if they keep getting rid of halfpipes, then when the hill with the pipe (that only gets cut good for a competition) has a comp, the kids from the surrounding hills won't go because they haven't had a pipe to get good at, not necessarly because they don't like pipe. but then when only 8 people show up for the comp, the hill with the pipe starts questioning their pipe and gets rid of it.

i don't know, i guess i could l just blame money and be done with it.

yea it is just like that. which really sucks. Id like to improve at pipe, but usually they are open for a couple of months, and most of that time, they have been neglected. Because of that, most people, especially around here, avoid the pipe, and so the need for the pipe isn't as great. Hopefully there can be a surge in it though, it would be unfortunate to see them go by the wayside.

pretty much every place in the east has a pipe. i actually can only think of one place that doesnt have a pipe or atleast have a shit one.

superpipes killed halfpipe skiing for most resorts.

go to a resort with a half pipe and a super pipe

the halfpipe always has more people.
they are mostly gapers, but at least they are riding it.

wait, i thought it was only 8 skiers showed up, weren't there way more boarders? and if i remember correctly the only thing i seen about it was you posting smething on here, so they should have done a better job advertising it, cause snoqualmie was all about mamafest and those snowboarder comps. also do you know what happened to the booter bash at alpental, cause i remember hearing about it early in the season, then nothing after like december?
