have any of you heard Bushes proposal about forests. he wants them to be cut down because it will help prevent forest fires.

Look at mcDonalds and what they do to the rainforest in brazil., how much is chopped down every year, leaving nothing but wasteland behind, the soil washes away, there's no real nutrients in it anyways. Brazil needs the money so badly, they slash and burn acres every day.

it was prob taken out of context and contorted by some dildo of a journalist. he was probably asked a question at a press conference like, 'whats your take on the forests of america mr. president?' and he prob said somthin like we will do everything we can to preserve our forests as long as possible so that generations to come can have them. and then joking around he prob said something like. but hey if we cut em down, we wont have to worry about forest fires.

congress did something like this in the 90s. They let loggers cut down on steep mountainsides prone to erosion. This caused very bad floods.

if you read it, it almost makes sense for like three seconds saying that he only wants to log the younger trees so they dont act as 'ladders' for fire to the older trees. well last time i check trees dont live forever. so if you removed all the young trees in an area the big ones would die and there would be nothing left. i hope bush gets assasinated.

hahah everyone on this thread is an idiot, first of all cutting down forests does help with forest fires i know it sounds contradictory(sp) but it actually does its the same thing as them intentionally setting fire to the woods. Even though it seems like they are doing the exact thing they are trying to stop it helps in the long run. So im really laughing at the stupidity of all teh 13 year olds on this site.

And another thing my gf lives in alaska and i dont think you guys even understand logging. When i first met her i was all against cutting down the forests too but then she gave me the educated view of someone that actaully lives there. I was there this spring and saw the effects of logging firsthand. They cut down such a small portion of the trees that are up tehre its negligible and they grow back anyway. Its not like they want to cut down all of alaska its a very very small insignificant portion

All that is true and straight from the article. And dont try to argue that fact with me, my best friend spent a whole summer being a forest fire fighter and learned all the tactics and what not. And this spring i was actually training to do it with him this summer... but other things got in the way.

Anytime man interferes with nature unwanted consequences occur. Sadly, preservation of the earth is low on the governments priority list. Sure this legislation might slow forest fires, but cutting down tons of trees can affect the enviroment in other just as destructive ways.

Ya i totally agree, look at brazil they are cutting down forests at a horrific rate and i would be totally against taht. But i dont think anyone on this site understands how logging really works in alaska and other forests. Seriously fly up there this summer like i am again and from a plane you will see millions of billions of trees just growing endlessy as far as you can see. and the percentage that they cut down is sooooo tiny, just go up there sometime and you will see my point. its funny because 2 months ago i was totally against logging of any means, then i go up there and i was completly changed

I am still undecided on the issue, because we need lumber, but I really have no idea how bad logging is for the enviroment. These issues are so damn hard to find an good compromise, because our enviroment is going to shit, but our lives are so dependent on our destructive ways.
