DIN question

im 6 foot 135 pounds and pretty agressive skiier. i have the rossi power 100 bindings (the ones with the pivots also known as the scratch 100's) now ive heard that these bindings can have high DIN's and still release during a twisting fall. if this is so should i crank my DIN's up to like 9 or ten even? im shying away from ten becase it puts a lot of stress on a bindings springs and mechanisms if its maxed out. im lookin at like 8 or 9. what do you think, is this alright?

yeah im the same size to, 6 foot like 140, somehow the ski shop dude was being a queer and he put my din and 4 so when i got out there it fell of like a motherfucker, but i cranked it up to 7 or 8 and worked well.

Snonasty - you didn't mention your boot sole length. This is much more important than your height.

On a binding rated to a 10 DIN, I wouldn't put it past 8.5.

im 6'2 180 and have my scratch 140s on my Pistols set on 12. I wouldnt ski anything less than that, seeing as the only times i have really hurt myself were from bindings pre-releasing at the wrong time. Ive only come out of them once, and it was a twisting fall in the pipe that could have fucked my knee up, but the ski came off without that much resistance at all. Shops set your din low when they mount them due to liability - they could be held responsible if someone breaks there leg or knee because of high din. Make sure you crank them up before you ride on them, and dont crank them up to the highest setting. They shouldnt be set higher that 2 numbers lower than the highest setting - it is bad for the springs and makes the binding less reliable.

my boot sole length is 310mm but why does that matter so much, im gonna try them at 6.5 and crank them up if neccesary, ill just bring my screwdriver with me the first day i use them.

The boot sole length determines how much pressure can be levered from heel to toe or vice versa. Think of a torque wrench: the longer the arm, the less force is required to turn the bolt or in THIS case, pop out of the binding.

So bigger boots require a higher DIN setting than smaller ones in order to retain the boot in the binding when faced with the same force.

clausen when you say 29.5 is that in cm. so then it would be 295mm? so my boots are 310mm so that would make tham 31.0?

look on the side of your boot it should have the measurement on it. Usually near the heel I think.

ya thats where it says 310mm on mine, i was just wondering if the mm measurement is where they get the double digit decimal number from on boot sole lengths. like would mine be 31.0 cuz they are 310mm long?

the boot size is not the same as the sole length - my 29.5s have 335mm sole length. boot size is the size the boots come in, usually in .5 increments. like 28.5, 29, 29.5 and so on. i got big feet- size 12s

different companies have different sole lengths....for example, the heel piece on an atomic is different than that of a salomon so they have different sole lengths....

Snonasty, I checked with the binding chart. You should be a 6.5 anyway because of your light bodyweight (the other key factor).

I did screw up on the DIN setting stuff, sorry. I was thinking from the perspective of the boot and not your body. Because of the higher potential torque provided by a longer boot sole, you need a lower setting to preserve a consistent release value for your KNEES. The assumption here is that everbody's knees will blow apart when the same amount of force is applied.

Please keep in mind that I can no way legally endorse any particular setting for you. This should be left up to, and adjusted by, a licensed technician, blah, blah, blah...

yeah thanks man^ i cant have the shop near me do it anymore though. they got a bad batch of bindings and when they were set at like moderate DIN's they werent releasing. some stuck up faggot blamed the shop and sued and they arent certified to adjust DIN's anymore. Its not hard anyways, just two fat screws in and out. thanx for all the help.
