Crichton!!! I hate the way GT rides pipe, I dunno why. Maybe it's because of the way he came in 2nd at the USFO, his first hit was big, but he spun without a grab, and his hands up by his throat, and I just didn't like it. Crichton throws down hard, did he go as big as last year?

It might have been the worst half pipe comp of all time. It was foggy as shit, couldn't see from one hit to the next.

What they forgot to tell you was Greg won with a THREE HIT run, when others like Amba were doing 6 plus hits. there was no second and third, it was a four way tie or somthing gay like that.

anyone else se him in the bump and jump comp with tanner, evan, and a few racers? on the mogul run (first jump was rail, 2nd was mogul jump, 3rd was table) did a worm turn out of the start, daffy off teh rail, and hit up old school the whole way down. fucking best run I've ever seen.

hibbert's always been a good pipe skier... just seams to have troubles landing... one of the few pro skiers I see sporting a helmet all the time.

sucks that the comp wasn't as good this year (from the sounds of it)... last year was so amazing (i was so damn burnt at the end of the day last year)

Pros dont wear helmets cause 95% of the time they dont land on there heads, they land a little off and catch a edge, or fall back resulting in injurys that dont effect your head soo helmets are pointless...

youre retarded to say that helmets are pointless, cause if you fall a little on edge off of a big jump you could get whipped around and then smash your head on the ground and get a concussion, or if the jumps landing is near the woods you could end up there and smash into a tree. and hibbert has to wear a helmet cause if he doesnt and he hits his head again, he'll prabably get brain damage depending on how bad the crash is

D-Spin, thats exactly how I landed and fell on a TINY hip doing a simple trick i've done hundreds of times. I had a helmet on and i STILL lost about 3 months worth of memories... I don't know if I'd be able to wipe my own ass if I didnt have a helmet on then.

they do go a hell of alot bigger than most of us, but imagine how much better off they would be if they actually wore helmets, there was that one guy in Strike 3 that tried to hit the hip straight on at super park, and missed the landing, then he died, dont know if he was wearing a helmet or not, but it was pretty funny

yeah okay.... to sort everything out...
GT's 1260 was kinda butt... but still super sick, as was his neon yellow suit.
Dumont owned the pipe, he was getting over 20 feet out, and soooo smooth.
Crighton was crazy good, and John Sim's opposite mutes were soo stylie. Turpin is dope... and his switch hits were crazy, but he doesn't get the credit he desevres. oh, and hibert was dope too.

The comp was definitely not a complete waste, as there was some very progressive stuff being thrown down (i.e., Turpin's fakie run and Crichton's fakie 9). The best skiers in the world (Olsson, Hall, Crichton, Turpin, Woods, etc.) definitely showed up and gave their all, but unfortunately the judging was lacking, to say the least.

First, the judges used a modified format because they couldn't see the whole pipe from the bottom due to fog. So instead they have three sections with a couple of judges working each section, and head judge Loubek at the bottom (where he can't see a thing, but still OK's/changes the scores!). What they should have done was put them ALL in the middle of the pipe where they could see above and below, and hence the whole pipe.

Second, GT should not have won under any circumstances. You could very easily argue he shouldn't have been on the podium, either. How does someone who throws an unstylie 1260, followed by an unstylie straight air, followed by another unstylie 9 win the whole event when guys like Turpin, Crichton, Hibbert, Symms and others did highly technical and stylish runs with more than 3 hits??? A 1260 is a great move for the best hit comp, but NOT to win a WHOLE pipe comp. Unfotunately, the message to all the kids coming out of this result is that you can win a pipe event as being a one-hit-wonder. Is that the message we want judges sending at the World Skiing Invitational? Hell no.

Finally, what should be done about this? First off, don't use judges like Loubek who have a track record of poor performance. Get some current riders or ex riders who actually KNOW what style is and how to judge a whole pipe run. The whole thing would have been fine had someone like Deschenaux been the head judge. Even the 12 year olds watching the comp would have done a better job -- they're the ones that truly know what style is and what deserves to win. And second, comps should take the riders' opinions into account, not the judges. We can't have judges saying crap like 'you HAVE to go big to win' when the pipe is unsafe for going big. The judges should sit down and listen to the athletes before the event as to how they would like it judged. This obviously won't work for small local events, but at the WSI or X-Games it is key.
