Newb JP vs. Julien Mounting Questions

Alrighty, I just got a pair of JP vs. Juliens, and now I have some questions about mounting them. I've read all the threads and read about mounting skis, but I still have a couple questions.

1. It sounds like +98 from the tail is a good mounting point. When measuring that, should I bend the tape measure so it bends with the tail, or should it go straight across? The mount point is very different depending on how I measure it.

2. They have been mounted once and I could remount the toe piece in the old holes. Should I tell the shop to do this? I looked at the mounting point, and if the line on the top is correct, remounting in those holes will make it -2cm which is where I want it.

That's all I can think of for now, but I may have more stupid questions, haha. Thanks guys.

3. Ah, I remember my other question. I'm thinking I'm going to mount them with the lifters, because I have a pair of TMs and PEs for park and I don't think I'll ever use them for that. I'm probably not going to ever hit a rail with them, and just use them on crazy pow days. They don't have a big turning radius so I figured this would give me a little more turning power through trees and stuff. Is this correct thinking?

there is always a "reccmoend mounting mark" on a ski. bring them to a shop, and tell them where you want them mounted in realtion to that mark....this mark is usually located a few cm away from the middle of the ski. it is mostly found ont he topsheet, but also on the sidewalls. On the JP vs Juliens, i believe the mounting mark is red line, or script..i cant tell. anyways, its almost in the middle of the ski. if you ride all powder, you will want to mount your bindings on, or maybe a few cm back of that line. of you ski park, then go a few cm forward..measuring in from the tails is not the way to go..

Ah, yeah the 98+ from the tail is -2cm back from the line, but people have said that on some of the JPs the topsheet isn't printed exactly right and the line is off a bit and to measure from the tail.


I think I may have answered my own question on #1. It might not be either way I described above. Here's how I measure'd it and I think it's right:

Placed the tails of the skis against a wall and put the tape measure against a wall and measure 98cm from the tail. It looked almost exactly the same as -2cm from the mark, leading me to believe my marks are correct.

-2 behind the sugested point is a good spot, thats where we(my shop) mounted a few apir and i got to try one of them. It was a solid point, you can ski the bc well but still take them into the park

Okay, I'm going to put the toe piece back in the previous holes because they line up almost perfectly with the -2cm/+98 from tail spot.

So that should take care of that. Can anyone answer my questions about putting bindings back in already drilled holes, or about the lifter plates on these things?

If I understand right I can just fill the old holes with elmer's glue and throw the toe pieces on without doing any other modificatoins. My shop has said that they put epoxy and steel wool in holes if a binding rips out (to put it back in), is that a better option? I'm probably going to have my shop do this anyway, but figured I'd ask.

you can put the bindings back in the existing holes as long as the screws aren't stripped. when screws are put in at a shop they are torqued in. the best thing to do would be to get helicoils. i have no idea what the steel wool thing is... sounds ghetto.

elmers glue doesn't really work. the glue shops use isn't to keep the screw in the hole. it's meant to make a watertight seal.

lifters on your bindings... why? personally, i hate them. i like the feel of being as close to the ski as possible.

Hmm... well I thought maybe the lifters would give me a little more turn through the trees because of the really short turning radius, but maybe I'm wrong. The screw holes aren't stripped out so I think it should good to go and put back in again.

the difference between lifters and no lifters is very little for edge to edge transitions IMO.

the feeling skiing on lifters and without lifters is pretty noticeable to me. i would just mount them without if i were you. make sure you use shorter screws though so you don't punch through the base. a shop should usually have a set laying around.

Steel wool and epoxy is a ghetto fix for ripped out holes. If the holes are in good shape there is no problem in screwing back into them with normal binding glue. I have done this on customers' skis and two pairs of my own with no problems.

Thanks guys this has helped a lot. I think I've got a pretty good idea on what I'm doing with the skis now. I've just got to think about whether I want the lifters on. On my other pairs of skis I have the lifters on because I didn't know it was even an option to have them off, so I'm use to them. Not sure if I want to have them on my park skis and not on my pow skis, haha.

i dont feel like reading all of it...so, do you ride all powder..cuz if so, you might as well go with lifters...cuz it will help in the turns..if not...just mount flat

dude the sharpie line on the ski in the middle is the -2 mark. I ran them there and that was a bit much tail for me, like, awesome, i could ski backwards in pow easy, but i would go -3 or -4.

WHOA WHOA WHOA. Hold on a minute there. 98 from the tail is like +4 or 5. You want them 89 from the tail, not 98... In order for 98 to even be on the back half of the ski it'd have to be over 196cm long, and it's not. It's 188. Mine are mounted 88 from the tail, and it's an excellent spot.

exactly, i cant rmember who was telling me this, but he said when you mount, go by the length of the ski by the tape measure, because the topsheet tends to be off, therefore the printed label of where the recommended point is going to be off.

Don't ever trust the line on Armadas, topsheets are never excact, measure the balance point to find true center then go back 2cm for park and 4-6 back for pow. My AR5 is balance point core center. My Ant is 4 back

No! BEHIND the line, not ahead of it. Think about what you're saying... why would you want them mounted further forward for powder than for park? It makes no sense.

Mounting on the balance point will almost always give you more tail than nose. Measure tip to tail and divide by two to find true centre.

I can't believe nobody said it yet, but mount them at +SEARCHBAR (89) from tail...I only say that because I already got this all figured out for us last year thanks to Taylor and Tyson Hall.

Go to the Armada website and the riders say what they like to mount them at. Maybe that will give you an idea.

If you decide to go without the lifters, be sure to have the shop use shorter screws, because the lifter screws will pop out the bottom if they are used without the lifter.

Yeah, +98 will fuck up those skis for sure (+4 from center). +88 or +89 from the tail is -5/-6 from center. Which is perfect. Mine are mounted +88 from the tail and they are awesome. And yes, if you look on Armada's website, thats where almost all of the guys are riding them as well.
